Heir in a merchant republic

In my current game I conquered the Free Cities as Ageon and reformed the freehold. For some reason the game decides to choose my 4 year old grandson as my heir, instead of my son (who is the designated heir).

Any ideas to correct this situation?

Probably your son became heir to title outside of your republic.
