Hellas AAR -- Started!

Would anyone care? (read: would enough people care?)

If yes, I play on a bit more and post a first installment as soon as possible.
If no, I play on, but skip the notes (they are a pain in the butt  ) and post nothing.

Mind you, it will be my first AAR...

Inferis.

Do it! do the AAR, never be afraid to post an AAR, if you've seen mine you'l notice how I got stomped as Prussia for my first one, but I posted it anyway. Go ahead, I sure will read it.

The game has started...

Anyway, here I go!

Hellas AAR

Settings:
IGC 2.3
Difficulty: Normal/Normal
Tax: Normal
Fog-Of-War: on

The game has started. Finally. We’ve been waiting for this for over 300 years, now.

I still remember Jondalar proposing the idea for this new game: we have this board game Fidalur created once when she was bored (again). It consists of a map of the world, and you control a country. You can build armies, expand your country, conduct diplomacy. Basically, it’s pretty real world, but playable at the table. We call it: Universalis. Anyway, Jondalars idea was to play Universalis in real life. At first, we laughed… Controlling a real country. But the more we thought and laughed about it, the idea has gained in popularity.

It was (and still is) a simple idea though. Get yourself worked into a court of any minor country (the majors would offer no real challenge); when all players have settled in and “control” a country, the game would start. The goal: take out the others. This would all have to happen behind the scenes, of course. I don’t think the general public would approve with an immortal running their homelands.

So, finally, the game has started. It is now 1492, and we’ve set 1792 as an end date. Any of the countries still surviving then, are declared winner.

My fellow immortals are controlling the following countries:
> Jondalar: Pommerania
> Yggdra: Holstein
> Ayla: Mameluks
> Fidular: Navarra
> Kol’hdar: Venice
> Terish: Eire

Myself, I (try to) control the fairly new country of Hellas (more about that later). I go by the name of Inferis, but the mortals know me as “Jan Van Antwerpen”, because I lived quite a few years in the beautiful city of Antwerp before I came to the Hellenian court (Jan was the name I took on, there). But everybody calls me “Janos”, here.

So, this is the story of “Real Universalis”.

Oh boy, I like the look of this one. "A game of Gods..." Excelent intro, I look forward to this greatly.

One question, are there other human players? Or are those just your imagination?

A story of a free Hellas

A bit more about the recent history of Hellas. After the fall of the Byzantine empire, the last of the lands of ancient Hellas were under Ottoman rule. The people didn’t like that; they have never been very fond of the Ottomans.

The Great Rebellion
The new Hellas started some 12 years ago (around the beginning of 1481)... An Ottoman commander in Corinth decided to have a party of 3 men beheaded, just because they dared to enter the lawn of his residence. It was a foolish act, since it triggered the very first riots of the Great Rebellion, and effectively were the “kickoff” of the new Hellas. The rebel movement (which was already active underground) was waiting for an event like this, and in no time all the Hellenistic countries were revolting. The Ottomans were a bit surprised about this, and had virtually no time to react.

On July 1st, 1481 the people of Hellas declared their independence: the Revolutionary State of Hellas was born. Most European states acknowledged that independence; it meant more work for the Turks and that would lower the risks of an Ottoman presence in Europe. Of course, the Ottomans tried to crush the rebels, but it seems the failed miserably.
After a year and a half of fighting, the Agreement of Stagira was signed: The Ottoman Empire acknowledged Hellas as an independent country. However, not all Hellenic countries were included in the new Hellas: The Ottomans only subsided Hellas and Morea.

The Union sees the light
The leader of the rebels, Dimitrios -- the same man that signed the Agreement -- was chosen to lead the new country. He had been effectively doing that since the Declaration of Independence, although there was no real country to govern. He quickly set things straight in Hellas… On September 7th, 1485: the Revolutionary State Of Hellas dissolved, and the Hellenistic Union of City States was born. It consisted of 2 city states: Hellas, with Athens as capital and Morea, with Corinth as capital. Athens was declared capital of the Union. Demetrios was elected as Union Governor.
The people cheered, they finally had a “home”.

Over the next few years Dimitrios ran the country very smoothly. He cleaned up the mess from the rebellions, and created a solid country. He proved to be a good diplomat too. By the beginning of the last decade of the 15th century, Hellas has good relations which a lot of countries.

The new Governor (or not?)
And now I come in. I had been involved in the Hellas court since it’s creation. Heck, I even helped beating the Turks. So, I had become a good friend of the people now ruling the Union. But it was time to move on: Dimitrios could not easily be manipulated, he was a strong figure. I had no other choose to remove him, and put a puppet king on the throne, so to speak.
On December 30th of the year 1491 Demetrios died. I paid a group of Ottoman fighters a lot of ducats to kill him in a suicide mission (people will do anything for money). It would appear that they would have killed him as revenge for the independence… The trick worked fine. Demetrios was killed by 3 Ottomans (they attacked him from three sides, and he got 17 stab wounds; he died 2 hours later) when he was visiting the new fortications of Athens. Not even 10 minutes after the Ottomans had attacked, all 3 were dead: the mob simply lynched them. They ended their lives in several pieces spread out in the middle of the city for all to see.
This allowed me to put my puppet king in place: I had chosen Joachim as a good candidate. He was a good friend of Demetrios and they worked closely together. It was I however who pushed Joachim in the right directions. I expected him to do the same when he was Union Governor.
Two days later, the Council of City States elected Joachim as new Union Governor. He was the only candidate.

The game has begun, it is January 1st, 1492…

This ends the introduction; the AAR starts here.

wow good start.

I took a look at the Coeur de Lion's AAR...

Indeed very similar, however there's one (big) difference: his "game" is played by Gods, while mine is played by humans, which happen to be immortal. It's a bit like the "highlander" idea. They're just ordinary people, but they have the advantage/disadvantage that they don't die from "life-attrition". :D
Mine don't have "supernatural" powers (I don't know if Coeur de Lion uses those, I haven't read the whole AAR), they have to rely on their own "cunningness" to get things done.

BTW, I'm writing the next installment now, I hope i can post it somewhere this weekend.

In principle, though, I'd say that the general idea is to role-play the "grey eminence" that controls the game and, in that respect they are similar enough. But as they say, "Great minds think alike" ;)

Just for the record, the gods, as is often the case, are basically projections of humans although their role in "my" game was one of influencing the world rather than controlling it. But if you think about it, co-ordinating attacks across three different continents does need some "knowledge" that humans would never have.

It also gives a rational explanation why I had explorers sent to X just because I knew what was there or why I built up troops around the low countries just around the time of the Calvin event :D

In any case, now I've just replaced the other gods in the game as the mystically AI and demoted them to roles of helpers. At least that way it helps to explain how inept the machine controlled countries are.

But if you don't mind, I'll pop in every so often to see how you get on. Never know, I may even RPG one of the other players - probably the most inept one.

Strengthening the nation

My hands had already been itching to take care of some issues with the current state of our country.

First of all, the treasury is not as full as I’d like it to be, and we need to find new ways to make more money. We loose a lot of census taxes right now, because the tax office of the palace is malfunctioning badly. I’ve been playing with the idea of introducing local tax offices in each city. The tax collectors have less people to check, and they can keep a closer contact. I think it will definitely improve the state of our treasury. Of course, Joachim thinks the same. On January 2nd, he proposes the “Local Tax Collection Policy” to the Council. On January 3rd, the Council approves the Policy. Three days later, the recruiting of Tax Collectors in the cities of Morea has started.

Secondly, we have no navy. This is an impossible situation, as we cannot leave by land, since the Ottomans refuse us access through their lands (even if they are rightfully ours). Joachim orders the creation of the Union Fleet; on January 6th, the ship building facilities in Athens and Nafplion start building a warship and a transport ship. It will take almost a year before they will be completed.

Thirdly, the fortifications in Athens are not what they should be. The reparations of the old fortifications have just finished -- Demetrios was killed visiting them, remember -- and I fail to understand why he (Demetrios) only ordered to fix them, and not to reinforce them. Any siege to our capital will not take very long. That’s is of course the reason that Joachim clears the funding for the upgrading of the fortress. On January 6th, the works for the new fortress start; the new (and bigger) fortress will be reading on January 1st, next year.

After the extremely busy day of January 6th, nothing much happens until January 16th. That day, a messenger arrives with the news that the Ottoman Empire has claimed the lands of the Mameluks, and are now at war with them. The army of 52.000 men that was sitting on our northern border starts to move out. This is very interesting (and good) news indeed, but not for Ayla. Last time I spoke to her, she said that the Mameluk people were not ready for a war. If hope she was wrong, or that their situation has improved: maybe this war will weaken the Ottomans enough so that we can attack them. We’ll have to wait to see how this war goes before we take action.

On april 1st, the Pope issues the Treaty Of Tordesillas. It seems Spain and Portugal have decided that the New World is theirs, and have split the booty in half. They also gain the right to take ANY property of another country (in the New World) if they consider it rightfully theirs. I wonder what they have done to the Pope for him to sign such a treaty… Oh well. We’ll see what happens.

In the beginning of may, a merchant ship coming from Andalusia brings the news that Spain has annexed Granada. They finally got rid of all the Moslems on the Iberian… Nice. Let’s hope we can do the same, in our lands…
Meanwhile, the war between the Ottomans and Mameluks is not going very good. The Mameluks already lost 2 provinces to the Ottoman Empire, and it seems more warfare is going on near the Mameluk capital. It seems Ayla was right, after all…

June brings the news that Venice decides to attack Austria. It seems the Austrian ambassador was blackmailing several Venetian Market Officers, which allowed them a better competitive scope into the right Venetian markets. Both alliances spring into action, and every alliance member goes to war. It’s funny, because Pommerania and Holstein are part of the Free Market Alliance of Venice, but I fail to see how Jondalar and Yggdra find a war against a country on the other side of Europe profitable. I’ll have to ask them at our next meeting.

The shipbuilding facility in Nafplion finishes the transport ship before schedule at the end of September. That’s good, they work pretty fast. The warship is almost ready, it will be ready in the second half of November. I have Joachim commission 2 new transports.

The year turns, and become 1493… In the beginning of January I get a note from Yggdra. Amongst other things he tells me that the government of Denmark has fallen: the rebels there declared their independence and called the new country Sweden. Interesting, the must be in a similar situation as we were 10 years ago.

January 18th, a Royal envoy from Bavaria arrives in the Athens port. They offer the hand of a niece of the Bavarian king. Joachim’s brother is still single (and a moron, but who cares) and we accept their proposal.

April 7th sees the birth of the second transport. The Morean shipbuilders work good and fast. Joachim is pleased, and orders another transport ship to be built.

It seems the state of Denmark has heard about our affairs, and needs our expertise on how to handle the Swedes. They want to create an military alliance with us. This is not bad; we need an ally, and I can use Denmark to take care of my game competitors of Holstein and Pommerania. They will surely don’t like it. On May 3rd, the Alliance Of The United Peninsulas is created. Initial members: Denmark and the Union of Hellenistic City States.

On May 15th, the third transport ship of our brand new navy is finished in Athens. This ship building business is going good; we decide to build another transport ship.

June 3rd, a black day for Kazan. Russia kicks Kazan out of it’s alliance AND decides to break its vassalisation with Kazan. They declare war on them. The other alliance members (Crimea, Ryazan and Pskov) pledge their loyalty to Russia and join the war.

It seems the virus-of-war has spread in Europa, because on August 8th, Milan declares war upon Savoy. Why, I still fail to see. Maybe Milan just wanted an access point in the Mediterranean. Spain, England, Mameluks and Scotland join Milan; France, Papal States, Brittany and Navarra join Savoy. It seems that Ayla did not want to lose her alliance in her war against the Ottomans. She probably took the right decision: most countries in the Milan alliance probably have no interest in Mameluk lands.

The sad thing is that the same virus has found Joachim too. I’ve never seen him so ecstatic: he’s constantly blabbing about “teaching those Venetian bastards”. Later, I learn that Joachim was born on one of the Cyclades (which are owned by Venice) and that he feels they should be Union property. He’s absolutely right, but we’re not ready for war yet. But there’s no stopping him: on August 30th, the Union Embassador in Venice delivers a declaration of war to the Venetian court.

Hellas at it first declaration of war:

Nice AAR. Good luck against Venice. Watch those rocky islands like Corfu, they usually eat soldiers for breakfast.

Yeah, get those darned Venitians...

realy good job, how did you get the picture?
