So when does it appear?

In my Antigonid/Hellenistic Empire game it just randomly occurred that my empire changed from Macedonian to Hellenistic...(goodbye cavalry levies).

There was no event or warning (like you get in CK2 when english culture appears) and it was kind of annoying (going from 3500 of primary culture to having only 30 people of primary culture...)

I just wondered if anyone knew what the trigger was?

My understanding is that you're supposed to get the Hellenistic culture as the reward for completing the "Hellenistic Empire" mission tree (after the big civil war).

Though I also thought it was bugged...

Perhaps it is bugged - I made the empire as my current ruler, but his mother was Hellenistic from birth and she died at age 85 or something (her father ‘had an accident’ when she was 16 so she had a looooong run!) - I believe her sister was Hellenistic too, but both their parents were Macedonian...

You get the Hellenistic Culture immediately upon clicking "finish mission" or clicking the last mission task, I don't remember which. There is no fanfare and no event. It immediately becomes your primary culture, and converts an honestly pathetic amount of pops around your capital region. Macedonian remains integrated, so you'll still be having a lot of that. If you want to see Hellenistic in any meaningful fashion, you have to unintegrate Macedonian, but if you do that, stack the assimilation modifiers (and count in the enormous assimilation boost you get from the Hellenistic Empire modifier you get at the same time), you can end up with this in ~70 years or so quite easily.

Yeah I didn’t do that either - I was trying to get the areas on the Indus before I finished the tree which happened when I formed the empire...and the culture had been around atleast 90 years before...

Well my Basileus’ two daughters were born with the culture, elder came to throne and my country switched to being Hellenistic
If you somehow obtained it as primary culture before finishing the mission, that sounds like a bug. I seem to recall there are a couple Hellenistic characters in the game at start though (which in itself is also probably an oversight) so getting it as a character culture could be related shenanigans.
