AAAAAAAGGGGGGGH it happened again. Every game i play i have the same problem. I don't know if its a bug or if i just don't know something about the game rules (the docs are horrible by the way but the game is awesome). Problem ----> I will spend a couple hours playing the game building up my alliances and then vassalize a country only to find 10 years later that it wont let me select the annex option from the menu. The latest instance was with Helvetia. I was leader of alliance and had royal and vassalized her in June 1498. 10 years later in 1508 i had +200 still and it wouldnt even let me select annex from the menu i.e. annex was not highlighted, also while Cancel vassalization option was highlighted clicking on it did nothing PLEASE HELP someone. This is the third game i have had ruined by this bug or whatever it is. Rapidly growing frustrated with hours down the drain. By the way i was Austria so yes i had a common border with Helvetia and it was well prior to reformation so religion was the same. FORCE ANNEXATION OPTION was set to ON if that has anything to do with it. Only thing unusual was that Hel still had a royal marriage with Venice active but i dont see how that should affect the situation at all. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE your help in this matter. Thanks for your time

No i had alliance then royal marriage then vassalization, then the original military alliance expired and then i couldnt annex when 10 year mark is up. Do you have to still be allied for the annexation to work? Please tell me its that EZ. Although that still dosent explain the failure of the cancel vassalization option. This is really my only beef with the game. The doc and in game mouse roll over say clearly 190 plus and 10 years are only req to annex and now im tearing my hair out trying to find out the other reqs. Like the common border one; only found out about that from reading these boards.

How far past 10 years is it? I know when I was diplo-annexing Brandenburg (as Portugal, of all nations), I waited ten years, and the option didn't show up, then a waited a little longer and it became active.
Also, if either of you are at war you won't be able to vassalize or diplo-annex. If so, you'll just have to wait until the war ends.
As for the "cancel vassalization" button not working, that's a bug that 1.09 patch fixes. (I haven't tried to cancel vassalizations so I can't confirm that particular aspect, but it fixed my inability to cancel royal marriages and alliances, so it's probably the case here as well)

BiB you are a God! Merci mon dieu. I loaded my game and attacked turkey so half my alliance would dishonor me and i could invite Helvetia into the alliance. (thats another thing the docs dont mention, it seems impossible to form alliance with more than 5 countries) I invited her in and when June rolled around 1508 boom annex lit up and it worked! Still dosent explain why the cancel vassalization didnt work, if it was a bug as mentioned by previous poster, i downloaded new patch today so im still wondering about that one. But anyway thanks BiB, i was gettin soooo frustrated with that problem. So i suggest a new update to the diplo annex reqs 1) +190 2) >10 years vassalage 3) common border 4) current military alliance
THANKS AGAIN U ARE DA BOMB.

You can have bigger alliances actually, but they are hard to make and harder to keep: if you invite a new nation to alliance, and you have relations +200, they still may decline, if they really hate another nation in your alliance.

I suspect that 4 other nations in alliance is a magic number. IMHO to get more than 4 to alliance the 5th nation invited must be in desperate situation and have no hope for other allies. I can make huge alliance if I am protestant and pick up nations one by one as they convert even if they do not like me patricularly (rel about 0, even negative). As soon as the alliance expires I cannot renew it despite my relations were developed to 200 and some nations vassalised. Any combination of 4 nations accept and that is all. Even vassals did not enter the alliance and rather stay unallied.
I also suspect the more VP you have (relative) the harder is to make large alliances.
