I just purchased the games and am having touble working through the game play. couple of problems (questions) thus far.
1. I don't have a couple of hours to go through the tutorial. Unfortunately, the tutorial can not be saved! As a result, I have no idea about diplomacy, War, etc. The manual is no good - there is a lot of neat historic information but precious little operational information.
2. I started the War of Independence scenario to see if I could intutively figure it out. I am being asked to conquer a province of England. I am in the province, have battled all comers, assualted and defeated the city and still do not know what to do to "conquer" the Province.
3. Sending merchants is a mystery. I just clicked "autosend" in the trade screen and go from there but want to know how it should be done.
4. I downloaded the manual, with an updated index, and found that it is the same manual packaged with the game.

To say that I am frustrated is a gross understatement.
Help!

I see this is your first post -- first off, welcome to the board. First recommendation, get the 1.08 patch (if you have not already done so). As for the manual, it is good for adding a historical background and flavor, but most of the how-to I learned from reading the threads on these forums. Your best bet for answers to questions like those you have would be under the FAQs forum.

1. I *think* 1.08 adds a save feature for the tutorial, haven't tested it myself.
2. To conquer a province, you have to gain it through a peace settlement -- otherwise, you only "control" it.
3. Different opinions on using autosend. Note: At the beginning of some games, you need to build up your tech level (to 1) before you can place merchants.
4. Yep...

Don't give up on the game just yet -- the heart of it lies in the Grand Campaign, especially as a minor (which is another FAQ). :) Best of luck!
