Got a game I started a short while back that I've been enjoying and want to keep going. I had taken a small break from it and started it back up last night. While I was playing I noticed there were new compatches for Statues of CK3 and both CFP and EPE so I saved the game, shut off and subbed to those. When I started the game back up, I crashed as soon as I unpaused. So I loaded up the previous auto-save (Auto-save was 1 July, the manual save was 2 December) and again crashed after I unpaused. Weird, so I turned off the compatches and moved Statues back to where it was in the load order and again the save was crashing after I unpaused. While the previous saves are all crashing on me, I can start a new game with no problems. Two mods did update between sessions so I'm thinking maybe one of those might have caused the problem and have already asked on their mod pages. While filtering through my mods list, I also noticed that one mod is red and was removed from the workshop, so it's possible that could have done it. The updated mods were The_Ramdom_Cheese's More Character Names and VIET by Cybrxkhan while the now gone mod is Grand Wedding which let you plan a grand wedding for anyone. I've also included the error and game text files from the crash log from this morning when I tried again if anyone can make heads or tales of it.

So this gets even more interesting. I stepped back several saves until I found one that didn't crash after unpausing. Was able to play along just fine, making new saves every few days. Finally the time came where I needed to re-load and again crashed after unpausing. Went back through every one of the new saves made and each one crashed after unpausing, back to the one that hadn't earlier. So I'm really at a loss for what is going on. I can play as long as I never have to load another save again.

More tracking and I've noticed something interesting. In one of the crash logs it made note of memories not being valid while also referencing a tournament action. I know of one tourny that was ongoing in the last working save file and I remembered that Alfred (the not Great in this game) was one of the ones there. I checked his memories in one of the broken saves and it was empty! Loading back up the working save and his memories are chalk full of all kinds of things. Can a broken memory page cause the game to break? Perhaps it was something at the tourny? There are 82 characters that all share the same script system error (what I'm assuming is the character ID number is different in each of the lines), so it's making me thing that whatever action it is referencing could be the culprit.

[13:41:42][jomini_script_system.cpp:278]: Script system error!
Error: and trigger [ Scoped object of type 'character_memory' is not valid ( weak (Character_memory - 33596142)!) ]

Did a little more testing around and now convinced it's a mod issue, which I always suspected but was looking at it wrong. I archived all the bad saves and loaded up the last working save (here on referenced as 28 Mar). I played the game until 1 Apr, saved and reloaded to get all the memories on all characters (I'm assuming all characters, all the ones I looked at had not memory) gone. Then reloaded 28 Mar and this time saved on 31 Mar and reloaded only to have no memories. Same with 30 Mar which made me thing. Reloaded 28 Mar, saved and reloaded only for there to be no memories. So it's not something happening in game that's remove them, it's out of game. The 28 Mar save is from 8 Jul, when I had last played until the other day when this issue started. So it's something that was either added or updated between 8 Jul and 13 Jul. Finally have something to work with and should be able to pinpoint the problem now! So now, the testing will begin shortly.

9 mods have had updates since 8 Jul, I've tested the game with each one disabled and still have the same problem. Each time, the memories are lost on any new saves and the game crashes after unpausing. Next step is to try with all 9 of those mods disabled, maybe a conflict between two of them that's doing it. The hunt continues!

And even with those 9 disabled, still having the same issue. I give up. To anyone reading this, thanks for the ear. This is how I <usually> can solve issues I'm having, typing it out as I try and fix it. This is usually effective in finding the issue, but not this time. I'm bamboozled! Probably going to put the game back on hold until the next DLC hits in September. Was already planning a mod list revamp then. Not going to do one now and then again in a few months.

I know, I know. I said I was done, but I wasn't. Took another dive into it. Disabling mods little by little. Getting down to just RICE and Catholic Trinity but kept having the issue with the memories being erased and the game crashing. I can't test without RICE or Trinity as removing either of them causes a crash on load. Neither was updated recently and certainly not after 8 July. I am absolutely perplexed by this happening. Unless a mod was removed from the list and that's what is causing it. But I hadn't turned anything off and when a mod is removed from the workshop it still leaves it in the playlist but just greyed out. In fact, there is one mod that had been removed from the workshop in that time. Grand Weddings. That mod let you plan a grand wedding for anyone. I wouldn't imagine that it being removed mid-game cause this so I hadn't considered it. But now, that's the last thread I have to pull and there is no way to test because the mod is gone from the workshop. Unless the author decides to put it back up, I'm at an impasse. Really hate when mod authors take their mods down like that as it can mess with peoples on-going games.
