Game Info: Hearts of Iron North American Versio 1.02 Strategy First Patch from there web site

Problem: I have had this game since Dec 12 and it was working fine. Once i upgraded to the v1.02 patch, my game was working for 3 days, before it started crashing apon loading of an saved file (Any save file, this includes the ones that came with the game). I had re- started a new game with the V1.02 patch and it was wired that it was not running the new, or my old save files. I had re-installed the game 12 times to no avail (following everything that you have said) i have used both patches for the North American Version (Paradox, and stra). ON the 13 time (under the strategy patch) my save files would load and operate... FOR 5 IN GAME DAYS BEFORE THEY WOULD CRASH AGAIN. This also applied to any new save files i had (I would start a new game save, reload, and watch in 5 days as everything crashes again) I don't know what to do, and i need your help, i have read all other forums, but they just don't seem to help.

Hi HEJ,

As I mentioned to dougmangin, you could try to send me a couple of your savegame files just to see if they crash on my setup here. I'll look at them tomorrow night.

Other than that there are a few things we can suggest to you (renaming your AVI sub-folder [under your HOI install directory] is one off the top of my head) - I'll give you some tomorrow morning (just quick-checking the forum before heading off to sleep)

Thanks for your patience, hopefully we'll get you working.

My deepest apologies for the delay, I've had a rough couple of days (but things are looking up for Christmas, so don't worry about it!). I'll try never to make anyone wait so long for a reply again.

I am getting the same crash-to-desktop problem with your savegames, after a variable amount of time (within one month). Since you seem to have tried uninstalling and reinstalling I need to ask you a couple of more questions, if you don't mind:

-Did you ever install a modification of any kind to the game?
-When uninstalling as we suggest do you also delete the folder after uninstallation to ensure as clean an install as possible?

Thanks a lot for your patience, we'll try to get you fixed ASAP.

Yes i have done a complete uninstall, and remove of game files, nothing seems to work, i have started out again as the germans and by 1940 the same problems where happening again.. i hope you can fix the problem, oh almost forgot, not a single modification has been downloaded except for the patch that was manditory (Since a patch in truth counts as a modification for the V1.00) anyway i don't mind the wait, just want my game to be up and running again so i can install a global communist regiem, or a global fashist regiem :) anyway have a nice CHirismis, and a great new year (DOn't get toooo Hammered.... oh what the hay, why not? Its almost the new year!!! :) :) jj :)

something to note

I also am having problems with 1.02-NA:
After beginning a new game post-patch, I was able to save and reload for some time.About Sep 1939 I quit and reloaded the autosave. The app ceased responding about halfway through the reload process (the text read "Reading Scenario"). After 12 minutes I killed the process. I then attempted to load a previous, manually saved, game, which in short order CTDed. Browsing through the save games dir, I noticed two things.
1: I had 1.4 meg free disk space.
2:Many of my recent manually saved .eug files had 1K sizes(the autosave appeared normal)

I then freed up disk space.

I confirmed that the quick CTD on load occurred only with the 1K saves, and that the app hang occurred only with the normally sized saves. Nonetheless, I remain unable to load any of them.

Hope this helps.

A save game requires two files. One is about 1K the other is larger.

Well, Same prob here..

Guess I oughtta just chime in here with my issue, which is the same basically: HOI v1.02, no mods, completely deleted and reinstalled, just started happening it seems, though I know its gotta be somethin... I turned off firewalls, virus stuff, loaded with only basic drivers (all up to date as well as DX 8.1). What else.... I can play the game just fine, but the autosaves do not work, the manual saves do not work. I hit the load button and blank screen, 1 second, desktop.

Love the game, but man. Its one thing after another with this 'effin thing.

Happy New Years all

Have all three of you disabled your \avi folders (rename to \avi_old)? I am becoming more and more convinced that there is some data that isn't cleared out of the buffers and that this might be an issue for save games. Also, could each of you check whether you have any paratroopers loaded in those save games?

Yessir...

My avi folder is renamed, I have no paratroopers. It doesnt matter on mine when I save it. I can play the game all night long, which, frankly, I do anyway, thank you Paradox; however, it would be nice, when I just HAVE to do something else, I could get a good save, instead of minimizing.

I wish I could pinpoint right when this started happening. It happened only rarely in HOI 1.01.

Anyway, err, good luck. May yer Tech Trees blossom early and often in the new year!

EDIT-

Oh boy. Well, I just did one last delete and reinstall. It works. I can save, load. Ah, ver. Fixed, I guess.

Great now just watch out for those loaded Paratroopers till 1.03. :)

His succsess story is still my failure... I havn't built any Paratroopers ever (Therefore they can't be loaded into anything!)... and it still has the same problems as before even after i rename the AVI folder.... I don't know what to do except to wait for the 1.03 patch a gues... if you find a solution before that please post it... that way i too can get back to playing HOI all night long.. BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Another thing to try is playing at a different resolution.
Run the HOI config utility and switch to a different resolution.

They Paradox crew is back from Vacation now so they will be working on squashing this I will update you as info becomes available.

Okay folks...

Johan is back and able to look at this problem. He's asked us to get a few save game examples for him to look at that definitely do not include any possibility of the paratrooper bug. I think Disk Killer may have one or two but he's temporarily unavailable so could I ask each of you who is still having a problem to e-mail a save game file to me (link in sig.) that you're sure doesn't have any paratroopers sullying the waters...err...skies. I'll forward those on to him and we'll see if we can't get a fix for you ASAP.

Thanks for your continued patience.
