I need help with a networking question. Here's the deal. I had a network of 2 computers working fine, using a hub. I used to play 2 player games on it fine.
Today I got a cable modem. I know you are either supposed to have a separate IP address for the second computer or a router for 2 computers to connect on the same cable modem, but all I did was plug the cable modem into the hub that has the two computers on it and now both computers can go on the internet at the same time. I go to winipcfg with both computers and the two ip addresses are different.
However, there is one problem. My old home network is now gone. Apparently the software that was run on the computer that was supposed to be on the cable connection has wiped out the home network. Maybe this is where the router/extra ip address comes in. As you can see, I'm fairly clueless about this stuff.
Anyway, could one of you networking experts explain what is going on? I basically want 2 things:
1. For both computers to be on a LAN.
2. For both computers to be on the internet.
I had 1 but not 2. Now I have 2 but not 1. Is there someway I can have 1 and 2 without buying a router or paying $10 a month extra to the cable company for another ip address? Please help me out!
