Hey. Can someone explain to me how allies work?

I've been playing as various Irish minors. In all my games, every single one of my requests to become the ally of another nation is instantly denied, and the only allies I can have are the ones requested to me by other nations.

I'm tired of being gangbanged by two people at once. How can I get allies?

Factions only have a limited number of allies. Once that quota is met, all requests are instantly denied.

Another possibility is also you are wanting to ally some one out of your league, and well, they don't want to ally some minor Irish province.

Each ruler can only be in an alliance with one other ruler.

The AI is usually pretty fast in getting into an alliance with each other, which means your offers will almost always be denied. I never ask someone to be my ally, I just accept one of the offers I get.

And allies are not always good ... if you are in a war that they join in, and you vassalize the opponent (f.x. a rebellious vassal). The ally is still at war with them, and if they have a claim, can go in and take your province. There is nothing you can do about that, unless you get a claim on himand declare war.

So if at war with religious enemies or someone the ally has a claim on, never vassalize.
