Greetings:

I am having a weird problem using 1.05b with picture pack. Initially, the game runs fine. However, at some point durin gplaying the game (could be after 30 minutes or 2 hours, etc), it starts to 'hiccup' when playing. Time will be advancing smoothly and then all of the sudden, for a second or so, I can do anything in the game...can't move the mouse, combat stops, movement stops, time stops. It comes back after a moment and everything appears to be fine. The interval for these events seems to start off about 10 minutes or so apart.

If I continue to play, the interval gets shorter and the hiccup gets longer (5 minute interval, pause for 3 to 5 seconds).

If I close out of the game completely and restart it, everything will be fine for a while.

Basic system stats:

AMD XP 1700+
512 MB PC 2100
nVidia Geforce 3 Ti 500
Creative Labs Audiy
Windows XP

Current game specs:
Music off
Resolution 1024x768
Country: USA
Time: 1947

I don't think I was having this problem with before I put the pciture pack updates on, but I am not sure. I put 1.05 on one day, then a week later put on 1.05b and the next night put on the picture pack.

I run Zone alarm, but last night I had it off. I also run CacheMan, but I believe this has happened before with Cacheman off (of course, I could be wrong...will have to test).

As always, first thing to do is disable the Bink player, by renameing the AVI folder to AVI_Back.

Also shut down all back ground apps.
and Make sure you have the latest Audio and Video drivers.

AMD Athlon processor. You didn't mention the chipset used, but it sounds like a VIA chipset.

If so, then you should uninstall the VIA 4in1 drivers. That will clear up your hickups. I had similar problems with Age of Mythology, and uninstalling the VIA 4in1 drivers solved it. I suspect the VIA drivers are not fully compatible with the Creative Audigy drivers.

Thanks mates!!!

Unfortunately, the suggestions about the avi directory, shutting down background apps and updated drivers did not help. I am going to see about removing the drivers for the VIA chipset. We'll see what that does. Thanks for the help!

Update

Well, I think I may have figured out the problem. In the middle of my last game I updated to 1.05b and added the picture pack, leader pack, etc. I just started a new game and have played through 5 years and the only hiccup was when Czechoslovakia ceased to exist...but that lasted only for like 3 seconds.

So, in short, I think the problem was caused by the updating I did in the middle of my last game. I had thought that maybe I had to many units or to many leaders in play, but I have more units and leaders this time without the problems of before.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
