I start the game without any mods, and when it gets into the main menu, I find that if it is in the background, the task managers tells that the GPU is about 97%, but it drops to 17% when I switch stellaris to the foreground. I did not even start the game, and it is at the main menu! It is weird, as the app at background should cost less resources.

I use 6900xt and the driver version is 23.5.1. The game is at 3.8.4, 3840x2160, full screen, 120hz, the settings are below:

anyone knows its reason? thanks

When you say "in the background" you mean you've alt-tabbed out of it?

Does this happen in all 3 display modes?

And, has it always happened since you've had the game, or only since what change or update?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log .

yeah, I alt tab in fullscreen and find this problem. I tried borderless window before, it has the similar issue, the gpu usage is about 55% in the background, but 17% in foreground. This always happens if I alt tab out of it.

I think this may be a problem in AMD GPU scheduling and resource releasing, may be an endless loop happened? I find same issue posted in the forum(The forum not allow me to attach link, you can search 'background gpu' to find it), he posted about 1 month ago.

I will attach the file when I go home. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for analyzing. I see that in the error.log , it contains errors about the costumed government from mods I created, which shows error when I start the game without anything. But I do not think this will be the reason to cause the GPU high usage.

Right click on stellaris4.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate to refresh rate 60.

Is that any better?
