Histoire du Comté de Hainaut(english)

Comté de Hainaut

Armoirie du Comté de Hainaut

Dynastie de la famille De Flandre

Baudouin de Flandre, Comte de Hainaut(1030-1085)
(At the end of his life- Duc de Flandre, Comte de Brugge, Comte de Gens and Comte de Hainaut.)

Early life
Baudouin de Flandre son of Baudouin de Flandre and Audele Capet was born in the year 1030. He received a martial education like most children of those times. He was trained to use every weapon of war. After some years it was evident that the young Baudouin prefered to lead people than to fight himself. Even though this seemed like lazyness he became a very good tactician. At the age of fifteen, he was married with Richilde de Lorraine. To celebrate his wedding, his father, Duc de Flandre, gave his son a small piece of land. Baudouin thus became Comte de Hainaut. In 1052, Baudouin de Flandre, Comte de Hainaut, sick of Henri Capet, Roi de France, pledged alliegance to the Duc de Lorraine thus breaking his alliegance to his own father Baudouin de Flandre, Duc de Flandre. By 1067, Baudouin de Flandre, Comte de Hainaut, had three children: two sons Arnolph(11 years old) and Baudouin(10y) and a daughter Agnes(8y).

Territorial fights
During his reign, Baudouin had many ennemies and arguments with his neighbours. Some of these were prestigious men like the Duc du Luxembourg, Konrad von Luxembourg, Herbert de Vermandois Duc de Valois or even the Bishop of Sticht, Willem von Sticht. The last one accusating Baudouin of Heresy in front of his liege (which did nothing to defend Baudouin). During many years those rivals claimed the Comté de Hainaut to be rightfully theirs, but Baudouin never abandonned the fight to preserve his Comté given to him by his own father.

Crusade
December 1, 1075, the pope called a crusade to retake the holy city of Jerusalem. Baudouin who knew only too well the cost of such expedition did not send troops at first, but when his father asked him personally to join him Baudouin had no other choice to accept. This left his coffers empty, he even had to take huge debts to pay his two expeditions. Those two expeditions resulted in no gain at all only leaving Baudouin with debts he would have to repay until his death in 1085.

Daughter
In 1070, the daughter of Baudouin catched an illness. During four long years, every prayers, remedies, doctors were unsuccessful. In 1074, Agnes de Flandre daughter of Baudouin de Flandre died of a 'fever' as would the priest call it.

Controversy
In November 13, 1076, after several problems with his liege, Baudouin declared the independance from the Duché de Basse-Lorraine to pledge allegiance to his father Duc de Flandre once more. Many people saw a way to be sure to get his father titles when he would die, in this new allegiance.

Duc de Flandre
On the date of September 25 in the year of our lord 1084, Baudouin de Flandre(father) died of old age. His son Baudouin de Flandre, Comte de Hainaut, inherited the titles and money of his father thus becoming the Duc de Flandre, Comte de Brugge, Comte de Gens et Comte de Hainaut. Because the money he had borrowed, for the crusade, was his father's, every debts of Baudouin were erased. The first action of Baudouin was to consolidate his Duché. The Comte d'Artois was very disloyal seeing nothing in his new liege that was so great about his father. Thus Baudouin decided to revoke his titles. He had, to do so, to use force with the help of the Roi de France. He finally granted the title of Comte d'Artois to his son Baudouin. Unfortunatly for Baudouin, he did not enjoy his new land for long, because six months later on May 9, 1085 he passed away giving his titles to his son Arnolphe de Flandre

Arnolphe de Flandre, Duc de Flandre, Comte de Brugge, Comte de Gens, Comte de Hainaut.(1055-1100)
At the end of his life, Duc de Flandre, Comte de Brugge, Comte de Gens, Comte de Hainaut and Comte de Brabant.

Early life
Born in 1055, Arnolphe received a martial education like his father's. After many years of dedicating himself to combat, it was clear that Arnolphe had been granted his father's skill for tactics. No one in the Duché de Flandre was a better tactician. This gave Arnolphe a name for himself. This made Arnolphe believe he could do anything. He lived his adolescence in depravation, enjoying wine, womens and food. At the age of twenty-four, he married Berta d'Osnabrück. When his father, in 1084, got the title of Duc de Flandre, Arnolphe followed him in his campaign against the Duc d'Artois proving his military skills. At the age of thirty, Arnolphe de Flandre became Duc de Flandre when his father died of old age.

De Flandre family
Like his father Arnolphe prefered to see members of his family in possession of land in the Duché de Flandre. Even more he had promised his younger brother that he would help him when he'd get to the throne and Arnolphe was a man of parole. This is why, in May 10, 1085, Baudouin de Guines, Comte de Guines was revoked his title. The man did not like it and Arnolphe thus was obligated to invade the Comté de Guines. In July 24, 1085, at the head of an army of 4500 men, Arnolphe captured the castle after two months of siege. He then gave the Comté de Guines and the Comté de Boulogne to his younger brother. In August 27, 1085, as another example of his preferance for his family, Arnolphe decided to give the Comté d'Artois to his uncle Robert de Flandre, who then gave the title to his son Robert de Flandre.

Controversy
In June 25, 1091, the wife of Arnolphe died. Since she gave no birth to any kid, many suspects his spouse to have poisonned his ex-wife, but there's no proof of this and Arnolphe showed no sign of happiness during the funerals. The only suspicious thing is that not even one month after the death of his wife Arnolphe married Melisande de Nevers. She was said to be of great beauty and in November the next year she gave birth to a son named Louis de Flandre.

Power
Arnolphe was a man who liked to show his power. Many said this was all about love of his country, but many suspects it was only to show his great valor. Arnolphe during his reign built stone castles everywhere in his realm. In those years stone castles were rare and only the rich could afford these. Arnolphe emptied the coffers many times for this task. In December 2, 1096 he even started the construction of a royal palace in Brugge, but he would not live long enough to see it finished.

Brabant
In July 1, 1095, Arnolphe, using his fathers claims, claimed the title of Brabant to be rightfully his. He then allied himself with the Duc d'Orléans. On April 23, 1098 he declared war on Brabant. Son after the Comte de Brabant was killed in battle and Arnolphe took his title: Comte de Brabant just in time to legue it to his son.

Death
June 7, 1100, Arnolphe de Flandre, Duc de Flandre, Comte de Hainaut, Comte de Gens, Comte de Brugge and now Comte de Brabant died of old age, he legue all he have to his only son Louis de Flandre.

I love CK AARs, they are my absolute favorites. But your EU III AAR was also very good. I was never really sucked in by EU II though, so I'd opt for CK or EU III.
