Im playing a game as Germany and it's going pretty good. Stalin sued for peace and it is summer of '44. Suddenly when I checked my diplomacy screen, Göring had taken Hitlers place in the cabinett! Could Hitler had died ?
Goering as Head of State? And you got Bitter Peace?
If you have Bitter Peace, it's impossible for the Hitler Assassination event to fire (and even if it did, Goering wouldn't be HoS, it'd be Beck or whoever). The only explanation I can think of is you had Hitler not only as Head of State, but as your Minister of Armaments or something and another country assassinated him with spies. The HoS and HoG can't usually be assassinated, but if you also have them as another minister position and another country assassinates them, you lose them as HoS or HoG too. Once I was playing Germany and I assassinated Stalin because he was also Armament Minister of the USSR, Molotov became the Soviet HoG. (Stalin gave a -5% IC 'bonus' and Molotov was Silent Workhouse with +5% IC, so I effectively gave the Soviets +10% IC. I wanted a thank you note. )
The only other explanation I can think of is if you are playing with some sort of MOD that adds/changes events. SMEP I know for example has an event where Hitler dies peacefully in his sleep and Goering replaces him.
It leaves the core gameplay as it is, but adds a large amount of events to the game, both historical and as a result of ahistorical victory. (Bitter Peace is expanded to give you three different options if you conquer it: absorb half of the USSR into Germany, create a puppet Russia, or create many very small states.)
There are a few bugs here and there though, and it looks like it will only be updated for AoD for now...
