Hi!
I'm new to this forum, so please don't kick me too hard ;)
Well, my problem is that when I play the campaign, the game gets very slow and laggy as time goes by. In 1943 for example, "extremely fast" isn't any faster than "fast".
I don't understand that, 'cause I've got an AMD 3200, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6600
I'm playing version 1.2 under Windows XP, and as I made my way through the search engine, other people seemed to have some problems with that, too. Yet I didn't find any clue that helped solving the problem, the only thing I know it must have to do with Win XP's memory management. The Victorian FAQ advises to use CacheBooster, but that doesn't work with XP.

Would be great if someone could help me with that...

Happens I think on some AMD systems, some kind of Driver/ hardware combinations.

If you save and then reboot your system ,then load the game, is it as bad or a little better?

After doing so there's no noticable change, the problem also occurs when for example starting the '44 campaign, which runs really slow. I guess it's the vast amount of information that has to be dealt with in the late game, but then other people don't have the problem on slower systems.

Yes it is a very hard thing to track down without the system in front of me.

Well give me your Dxdiag and I will take a look to see if anything pops out.
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

That's a lot of info to deal with, hopefully you'll find the reason.
And thanks a lot for your effort!

It is normal for the game to slow down as the war progresses because there are more CPU cycles going to AI calculations and more units on the world map. It has been that way since HOI 1 but nothing was never done about it cause most people play on Normal speed which you do not notice the slow down very much. It is only on Fast and above when you do.

Is that it? Normal speed is fine?

There are two types of slow down one is normal as Lothos mentioned.
THere is another slow down that is really bad and only effects some high end systems.

BTW, your video driver is way out of date.

Well, not having any comparison, I can hardly say whether the slowdown is "normal" or due to some technical problem...
Playing the game on normal is quite ok, but from around 1941 on, i can't go much faster than that.
On my buddy's system, which is a AMD 2.2 512 RAM, the game runs a little faster than on mine.
But since battle scenarios run perfectly, and as you told me this is a common problem, the slowdown might in fact be normal, so I'll have to accept it.

Sorry, this is the kind of thing that is very difficult to help without being in front of the system.

Castellon the fact he mentions a year that the slowdown starts tells me that is the problem. What I fear for him is once patch 1.3 is released if he installs it the program will get slower because the new AI takes more CPU cycles.

Volt I would suggest going up to 1 gig of memory. That will help cause if you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP when running HoI 2 you tend to go over your 512 megs of memory usage which means the OS will start using hard drive space for memory. I have 1 gig of memory and even though I experience a slow down still around the same time you descirbed yours it is not that bad when playing the game at normal speed.

I already have 1 gig of RAM, but maybe I'll just add another 512 MB, as a better AI in 1.3 should be worth that investment ;)

I seriously doubt going higher than a gig of memory will help significantly.
from 256 - 512 = huge difference.
512 - 1Gig = moderate difference.
1 gig+ = little differnce

Yes, You Are All Correct, But...

My experience says yes you are all correct about the game slowing down over time due largely to increase AI calculations despite a low-end Athlon64 with 1 Gig of RAM. I too have experienced this on my Shuttle SN85g4V2 with a Athlon64 2800+ with 1 Gig of RAM.

However, many of the increased AI calculations are unnecessary. Mostly, I am speaking about the numerous, thousands really in the case of UK, of fleets consisting of ZERO numbers of ships in the AI navies. This mostly seems to affect an AI UK, but any navy heavy AI such as Japan, US, and France, can and does experience this.

I do not know if this has been reported as a bug, but their is a simple work around.
1.) Save your game
2.) Load as an navy intense AI
3.) Pause game
4.) Go port by port to find these bunches of ZERO ship fleets
5.) Select these ZERO ship fleets, and combine them into a single
ZERO ship fleet per port
6.) Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all excess ZERO ship fleets of that nation
are eliminated
7.) Save game
8.) Repeat steps 2 through 7 for any other desired AI
9.) Load as your desired nation and continue play

This is not a perfect nor permanent fix, but it does help.

I've found out that the more I play it the faster it goes. The first time I played it, it took me so long to play the first year. But i continued to play it anyway, started a different game as USSR it went amazingly faster.

That does not really make sense, unless you had something running in the background the first time you played.

Yeah, I know it doesnt. I never run anything else the same time as I do playing a game. However for some reason after a few times of playing it the speed of it just improved. It might have been that the virtual memory paging file increased or something Im not sure.

Okay better this way then the reverse.

Hi I have a simmilar thing I think that there are some steps you can take I remember turning off some part of the game, graphics I think. It removed the rivers abd stuff and the game ran a little faster. there is more out there I just cannot find the seach funtion on the forum you seen it?
