I am new to IR and started with an Iceni run. I've conquered most of Albion and formed Pritania (sincerely hate the latin names and seriously hope they come up with a cultural version). I have never, ever, granted a holding to a clan, however in checking into that fuction I find that the majority of my land is held by various clan heads. I can't find any information as to why it happens or what it even means.

Does it reduce my income and manpower? Should I be revoking the holdings or not care as long as their powerbase doesn't get to big? What determines why my clans get holdings without my input?

Unfortunately, all our records on the region in the Classical Era were created or at some point transmitted through Latin (with the first Irish in the 4th century AD on), so without original written texts by those people (even just a reference point to try and "delatinize" the names) we're largely stuck with the Latin terms.

As to your question about holdings, acquiring them is an ambition heads of family will pursue. Since the next family head will inherit them, and plots / events can give other family members holdings, they will tend to steadily accrue them.

Holdings on their own do not harm you - in fact, characters can improve their holdings - and it does not impact your income. However, since it provides powerbase and income to characters, it may be wise to revoke them from already-irretrievably-disloyal family heads. Additionally, I believe that territories with holdings held by disloyal characters will be the core of any civil war - perhaps as a result it's wise to, when possible, push holdings away from the capitol.

Here is a link to the wiki article on them:
