To be fair my game is heavily modded, but I don't think it plays a role here. Either way it's an interesting find.

I noticed that I have a lot of cars parked near my train station, but the owners are living on the other side of the city (very far in other words), and I was curious to understand why they are parking so far away from their home (they were home sleeping) when I saw this.

With the mod Realistic Parking the cars they tend park pretty darn close to their destination. I had to put on my detective hat and stake out the parking lot and see what was going on. A mystery to unravel.

Sure enough, a homeless person (with a different household name then the car owner) pulled up in the car and parked in the parking lot and then proceeded to walk to the train and leave the city for good. My first reaction was...

* Did this homeless steal the car?
* Did the other family let them borrow theirs?
* Where was the car parked before the homeless person get their hands on it? (I don't think I can find this out, even if I re-load the save to track down the owner before the "theft".
* Does a homeless person just walk into some random car and drive off?

I do not know these answers, but I will continue to stake out the parking lot and see if the owners eventually come pick up their car or if the Police shows up at some point (hopium on my part?) and retrieve the car?
Has anyone else noticed this in their games? Do you have any findings on this? What mystery is unfolding here?

Some screenshots below.

1 / 3) The homeless (Angelina Goodman) pulls into the parking lot and parks it and then walks into the train station and leaves the city permanently. The owner of the car is listed as "The Morrison Family"

2 / 3) More information about the "thief" Angelina Goodman

3 / 3) Here are the details of the car owner. Rica Morrison. Ivy Morrison is just a child so won't be driving.

I'm pretty sure this is not intended behavior. But I do hope if Paradox every "fixes" this, that some modder adds it back in. People stealing cars in CS 2 may be one of the funniest things I've read. Maybe if Paradox updates crime this could be one of the crimes :D

You didn't understand the game mechanics. I had already written about it elsewhere here in the forum.

Residents do not own cars as property. They just rent them each and that too at zero cost.

This is how the game has been programmed since launch. No modifications will change anything

Actually, the owners did show up and claimed their cars later. For some it took a day or so, one waited a month, but they did show up (and walked across the entire city) to pick up "their" car. I don't believe in the car renting theory since I have not seen this myself yet, but I continue to be open to any possibilities.
