Due to an as yet non-reproducible bug with the launcher installer v.2024.12, we are issuing a hotfix in order to re-release to an older know-to-be-good version under the totally unexpected name of 2024.13.
Who is affected?
Players of HoI4 that has allowed Steam to update the game to the latest version of the game (1.14.8) on the 29:th or 30:th of August and does not have the latest version of the launcher (2024.12 or newer) installed and has the mysterious configuration that also causes the installer to crash when it attempts to update the launcher (we're not quite sure what this is yet, hence "non-reproducible")
Do I need to do anything?
Probably not. The hotfix will be deployed for HoI4 though Steam and will automatically replace the broken installer with a good one.
Why do I need to run a launcher installer? I have the launcher installed already!
This is going to get a bit technical, so hang in there! Ok, so when a game is installed that use the launcher for something (account SSO, mods management and upload etc.) it comes with a launcher installer that will typically install the latest available launcher version at the time when the game was released. This is sometimes (or more likely often) a pretty old version of the launcher. The launcher may or may not be able to update itself - It'll try, but firewall rules, anti-virus software or user action (*ahem*) may prevent it from doing so.
At some point in the future, you may install another of our games that requires a newer version of the launcher to function properly (e.g. with more configuration options or stronger GDPR compliance). If we tried to use the already installed version of the launcher, the game wouldn't work as anticipated. What to do? Well, this is where we are: The launcher installer of the new game will update the launcher to at least a version that it needs to run.
In this instance, HoI4 automatically bundles the latest available launcher installer in order to ensure perpetual compatibility between launcher and game. And that, in combination with QA process deficiencies in the installer production, is why some people are now having issues.
This is outrageous!
Quite so, and we do extend our most profound apologies. The launcher has one job, amiright? We'll have a long and hard look at the test systems we use for our QA process. Clearly, there are configurations that we don't test for, so we need to find the cause of the crash and add it to our test suite to ensure this problem never reoccurs.
