As you can see, starting with the House de Normandie in the 1066 AD bookmark can result in a victory. My kingdom could defeat the Holy Roman Empire while it still held most of Aquitaine and had Carpathia as an ally and no realm except for the Muslim anti-Crusade alliances of Xenxir can defeat me. I successfully led the crusades against Jerusalem, Syria and Egypt as well. The Holy City of the Muslim faith is actually Catholic.
1. Do not build buildings until you have around a 5k gold. There is no point. Better to spend the money on mercenaries.
2. Always ask the Pope for gold, whenever you can, you should. And don't forget to send the Papacy a measly hundred and fifty gold back. The Pope will support you no matter what.
3. Rebellions. Liberty wars are the best because you can up the realm authority during the war and end up at where you were.
4. Rebellions. Always choose white peace unless you want to revoke titles from the revolting nobility. Ransoming will help you in the early game but it's true you might end up with a thousand levies and retinues total and you will get another rebellion or be attacked by a foreign realm and lose the game.
5. In early game, split your armies into two halves in order to siege two provinces at the same time. If you feel lucky and the war is happening on your territory, you can try to divide your armies into 3 and a 1 quarter in order to lead your enemies towards the bigger army. They will chase the smaller army more often than not.
6. Remember that it's better not to make engagements as your children can marry during a war, giving you the opportunity to pick the ally that will help in the war effort. There is no point marrying your family off to local nobility, the peasantry or smaller houses if you can do so at the time of war and successfully turn the tide.
7. During crusades or wars far away from your own territory, don't divide the armies unless you can siege many provinces at the same time.
8. Pressing claims is important yet in the early game there is no way to press many claims at the same time, that is why you need to push your marriage game to the limit and do the William de Normandie & Mathilde van Vlaanderen maneuver. Marry your sons to the daughters of dukes and press claims, you will gain more territory this way. Your main heir can and should marry any royal daughter. The claim on a kingdom can be pressed and it is the easiest way to acquire a lot of land quickly.
It took me a while to get here, even though I played CK II. My first game was as Haraldr Fairhair and I managed to unite Scandinavia without Finland. I remember it fondly and it is true that the tutorial is the devils spawn that I have never even touched. It's better to just jump into the game, learn the interface and try to create realistic realms with realistic borders. If you depend on what the tutorial taught you, you don't depend on yourself and your own understanding of the game.
Feel free to comment on the tips, the realm and ask me any questions.
EDIT: Yes, Normal on Ironman.
