I am denmark and would like to add a colonist or two a year after the 1600s. I tried putting in 'colonialnation = yes' and adding 'dynamism = 0' in the 1492.inc but it just made the game unreadable. anyone know how?

Open the save file in 1600 and add the line dynamism = 2 at the appropriate place, I guess.
There is a file in the database folder that lists colonial dyanism for various time periods for certain nations. However, I don't think that Denmark is one the nations that ordinarily gets any colonial dynamism, so I'm not sure if you can create this for them.

I do not think you can change it via the savegame. I think its only via colonists.csv
Depending on where you put it. Some of my shipyard hacking experiments ended with a crashed game.
The colonists.csv file is a little strange, a score of 1 5 or 10 gives no dynamism, a score of 100 gives 1 dynamism. Haven't tested yet, but I'll assume that 200 is 3(that's spain's starting dynamism correct?) and 250 is 4.
I have been toying with the idea of giving all minor countries a flat dynamism of 2 or 3 and see if that stimulates colonial competition.

I want to do the same thing: give more (minor) countries a chance to colonize. Uncreative, please report the outcome of your experiments, and what needs to be done to which files.
I don’t think anyone has adequately explained how to permanently add new leaders to minor countries, either, and I am trying different methods. There’s a common opinion that only one file has to be modified, the nation’s leaders.* file, but I think more than one file needs to change.
