As a non-major character, started as a one province count and now a duke of Pyke, in the Iron Isles. I would ask in the Citadel forum but for some reason I can't access it, the connection just times out.
 
Become a scholar and you have the ambition to get a dragon egg.
 
random event or cheat it.
 
Also characters of valerian culture can get the ambition. Also if you sail your character to the smoking sea, beware its a nasty event.
Also I think if you control dragon stone theres another event.
