I understand that there is a new system in the mod which allows the creation of kingdom level Imperial Provinces that function differently to vassal kings. How differently do they function? Do they automatically revert back to the top liege after the death of the holder? Do they get the "Vassal King" malus? Does playing as one have any special features? How many are there and where?

They are often comparatively large de-jure Kingdoms, that as the Byzantine or Roman Empire, replace existing Kingdoms.

The only function difference I can see is that the Byzantine Empire is allowed to create them, as normally there's laws saying vassal Kings aren't allowed.

You could grant one as a Viceroyalty to have it revert to the liege on death.

Most of the Legacy of Rome reconquest events which grant prestige are tied to the Kingdom level Provinces.
As for how many and where:
  • k_roma (Italy and Sicily)
  • k_thracia (Bulgaria, Thrace and Adrianopolis)
  • k_pontus (Trebizond, bits of Nikaea, bits of Armenia)
  • k_roman_asia (mostly the rest of Nikaea)
  • k_macedonia (mostly the rest of Greece after Thracia took the rest)
  • k_mauretania (mostly the same)
  • k_roman_mesopotamia (mostly the same as Mesopotamia normally is)
  • k_syria_palestrina (Syria and Jerusalem),
  • k_viennensis (Aquitaine and most of Burgundy)
  • k_aegyptus (Egypt and Cyrenaica)
  • k_roman_africa (What's left of Africa after Egypt took the rest)
  • k_illyricum (Croatia and Serbia)
  • k_gallia (France, Brittany, Lombardy, a little of Germany)
  • k_germania (Germany, Bavaria, Saxony, Frisia, Pomerania, anything left of Francia)
  • k_britannia (England and Wales)
  • k_hispania (All of Spain)
  • k_caledonia (Scotland)
  • k_hibernia (Ireland)

i still haven't figured out how they're triggered.

i know where effect is in the files, but where are creation conditions? and what are they?

Owning all the duchies listed in the text file that deals with it basically. I found out when I had to resort to some editting as some duchies that should've been included weren't(two duchies in the middle of Britannia amongst others).

Then some event has to fire ingame(I think its in the text file I mentioned above, but its been a while since I tried it).

ok, i greped it. it seems some only happen if you actually restore empire, while others have different conditions. like africa, all you need is tripolitania, tunis and kabylia.

better conquer kabylia.

conditions are in roman_events.txt and CK2Plus_roman_events

They're triggered off of the Imperial reconquest events that were basically just back pats in vanilla.

If you can tell me which duchies I can get that fixed.

I don't have the savefile anymore so I can't remember with absolute certainty, but I think it was Powys in Britannia and another british one that escapes me at the moment. There's also one duchy in Mesopotamia at the border between it and arabia that remains in the kingdom of Mesopotamia IIRC. I'd have to start a new game to check though.

EDIT: Checked it now. In Britannia its the duchy Powys(remains part of Wales) and the duchy of Oxford(remains part of England). In Mesopotamia its Karbala(remains part of the kingdom of Mesopotamia).

Was playing around with this last night. Was fun, but... I might suggest a revamped Armenia to clean up Mesopotamia, Georgia and what's left of Armenia?

Also, they weren't properly setting their liege as e_roman_empire. Was this intentional?

If you mean de jure liege, then yes. They'll have to drift into e_roman_empire.

Can we have it automatically de-jure?
Currently as soon as the Byzantine Empire becomes the Roman Empire, you lose a bunch of de-jure land, since the Kingdoms in the Byzantine Empire get replaced with something else.
At a minimum, it would be nice if the integration progress of the Kingdom the capital of the new province was in was carried over.

IMO that's part of the challenge of re-creating the Roman Empire. Everyone is going to fight it at least a little bit, even if you were Byzantium before. Makes it more interesting and more of a proper challenge.

Even the land that was de-jure Byzantium? Losing Greece and Anatolia as de-jure doesn't make any sense to me.
