I haven't played CK for nearly a year, recently my interest rekindled, i had 1.03b previously, i applied the 1.04a patch yesterday. Normally for any games, the patch version is shown in the main menu page (lower right hand corner). Its just weird that I cant see the patch version as nothing is shown on the main menu. Have I then successfully patched 1.04a?

It is always suggested to start a new game.
You should also get the latest Public beta patch as well.

Some of the changes do have an effect, many don´t. For instance changes in events or to the actual .exe code have an effect also on games started with earlier patches but tweaks to scenario setup won´t show. It might also not even be possible to continue an older game. If you have a very dear game you wish to continue it might be worth it to make another install for the new patch and copy that save to it to check what happens.
