how do you install mods outside of paradox or steam?

so lets say you installed a mod for stellaris but you got it from nexus mod how do you put it in the game, do you downgrade it or is there something else. I haven't got any mods outside of the official place, just curious on what I should do to make the game work and put it in?

Just put the mod folder in your Documents/Paradox_Interactive/Stellaris/mod folder.
