I usually play a couple hundred years, but sometimes I quit if the situation becomes totally ridiculus, like if the pope is ruling from mecca while musilms have conquered rome. Unfortunately that actually happened to me, and it annoyed me so much, I quit.

It depends on what is my goal (if I have one), when I played the Ui Neill Mor (Tyrone) I stopped after uniting Ireland and having conquered the western isles. With the Khazars, I stopped after having all the provinces to make Khazaria. Otherwise I play until the end and continue in EUIII.

Same, I will quit if I accomplish a goal that I set out to do like creating the Kingdom of Armenia, otherwise I'll play several hundred years until I get tired of a particular dynasty. I like playing until after the Mongols show up in any case, just to see what havoc they wreck.

sounds familiar to me

I usuallly managed to get my entire dynasty wiped out by the plague so I dodge along with the survivors untill the last stand:rolleyes:

Also, I found out that if I set some goals, they are either laughably easy to achive, or too darn impossible and I get annexed on the way...
Best results for long game for me is to ride along with the tide and cede opportunity when it shows itself.

I usually play any strategy game until it is obvious that I have a complete command of my destiny. In CK that means surviving the Mongol invasion and having so much gold that vassal loyalty need never be a problem.

I agree not to set too many goals except the obvious, e.g. if you're a french county you want to become king of France (although even in this case it's a fun departure to create a kingdom far from home).

Sadly, I seem to be 'going through' strategy games too quickly these days. I restarted this one several times to get the hang of it, and then played as France up to about 1105 or so. I had vassals sprawled out all over Western Europe, ~5K prestige, and ~7K gold and it was starting to feel a bit tedious and inevitable. Though I do need to stick with it. I think having goals in game is important for it staying fun. I should probably focus on absorbing all the surrounded but non-vassal Counties within my Kingdom and also kick the English off the continent. Given I'm like 50 and about to die that may well prove to be quite a challenge.

I often play all the way untill the end date. It takes about one to two years to finish one dynasty; if i get bored, I simply continue the save in few weeks, so I pretty much finish every dynasty I start.

I usually end up getting bored around the 12th Century. However in my current game I've made it all the way until 1430, just 23 more years to go! :D

I can tend to get bored or become interested in a different dynasty, so I usually last about 200 years and rarely 300.

I usually finish the 1337 scenario.

I quit when it starts to become really slow (game speed) when I start in 1066...

When my dreams are fulfilled, I often change countries. For example I wanted a strong vendish kingdom. After 100-150 years, the Nakonids were holding Poland-Denmark-and bits of east Germany (from Bremen to Silesia).
It was time to change. I opted for the last remaining iberian royal family, the dukes of Galicia (the others were wiped out)

If I feel that playing till the end date is fun then I finish the game but if it feels too much like a chore then I don't.

In my long standing Byzantium (Komenid) campaign I'm really getting bored. I'm 250 years in I think; currently it's way too easy. I have completely crippled the Seijuks having taken territory all the way east of Baghdad. I have a well developed personal demense and can muster 85k troops just by myself, not to mention the 40 vassals. I hold a ridiculous amount of king titles:

Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Sicily, Africa, Egypt, Jerusalem, Syria, Mesopotamia, Armenia and Georgia.

The empire can muster 400k troops at full capacity so any opponent is a walk over. The only thing keeping me from throwing in the towel is wanting to reunify the Roman Empire. Even though it might still be a challenge it seems a little pointless since I have almost 4 x the manpower as any single opponent.

Note: I'm not a great player, not playing on the hardest difficulty and I had some good luck.

It sounds like a lot of us really should be playing on "Very Hard" but we're a bit spoiled :D

Personally I never like strategy games on the "higher difficulties" (well maybe one notch above normal is okay) because really all it ever amounts to is the computer being given stupid numerical advantages.

They're always fun till you figure them out; then they can sit on your HD for six months to let you forget enough about them to come back and enjoy again.

Same reasons here. After 100 years I tend to quit when the countries get fractured up into landlocked pieces (ex: Germany gains lands in the middle of Iberia; the Seljuks Turks stretch from Constantinople to the the far East but all the areas between there and Baghdad are controlled by independent Muslim states).

My latest game was with the Duke of Barcelona, whom I turned into the King of Aragon ... and eventually also King of Portugal, Leon, Castille, Navarra and Andalusia. I even got the Kingdom of Mauretania ... but I gave that to a jewish courtier ... just to see if a jewish kingdom could survive :D

But then I sort of ran out of goals to persue. So I instead split up all the king titles to sons and vassals, and changed to play the Teutonic Knights instead. Plan is to get the Baltic pagan under my rule :)

A bit hard though as I only have one life-time to do it in, before my ruler dies (and is probably not inherited by someone from the same family). If/When that succeeds, then I'll find another realm to play.

If you save just when your ruler dies (pause before the surrender screen) and edit the save file you can reload as his successor and continue playing if the challenge is still interesting.

cool ... good to know :D

But right now my interest is in making a Wendish kingdom title and continue an old game with the Nakonids ;)
