In my game it's been more than 40 years since the last Crusade ended, from about 1190 to past 1230. In all that time the Popes have just sat on their butts. Shouldn't they have called for a new Crusade by now? It's true that the Muslims as a whole are not doing well: few are left in Iberia; they were cleaned out of Sicily; both Jerusalem and Alexandria have been conquered; and the Seljuks have made little if any progress against the Byzantines and related Orthodox groups in Anatolia. However, most of North Africa and almost all of the Palestine area are still available, in principle, as Crusade targets. So why the lull in crusading? When can I expect a new call from the Pope?
