I have seen conflicting reports on how many and which IJA divisions were motorized. Numbers range from 2 to 4 and the ones named include Guards, 5th, 18th, and 48th divisions, but I can't seem to find a comprehensive list of such divisions and therefore can neither verify the correctness nor find the time of their transition. Does anyone know where I can find more detail about them?

The 48th got motorized in late 1940 or so.
The 18th wasnt motorized afaik.
The 5th one was arguably the best Japanese Division. I know it had some tanks and got paratrooper training but it was never fully motorized afaik. Maybe a regiment or so.

From what I gathered, only the Guards (2nd Guards) and the 5th were unanimously considered motorized, but even the Guards had only around 600 trucks, most of the infantry were on bicycle.

How motorized were the Japanese "motorized" divisions is definitely a related question here. If you check the 1939 German TO&Es at Niehorster (http://www.niehorster.org/011_germany/39_organ_army/_39_org_army.html) he lists the amount of motor vehicles for the formations. The regular infantry divisions (not generally considered even semi-motorized) seem in line with the Japanese motorized divisions. The actual motorized divisions have about 2700 personnel and load carriers.
