First off, thanks for all the FAQ's, I kept trying to play this game as Ireland, and getting steamrolled, until I read here about playing as Duke of Italy or King of Denmark to learn the game. Seriously, they should have just put that in the instruction book.

Anyway, I'm playing as King of Sicily, on my first game where I lasted longer than fifty years, and I really want to move up into central italy and take Rome , but i want to know if there's a way to do that without making all of Europe hate me more than they already do.

also, do you lose bad guy points over time or when you get a new ruler, or do they juts keep building up?

Once you have a claim on a title held by the Pope you can attack him, the rest of Europe won't hate you for fighting the Pope.

When you are at war with the Pope there is a chance that an event might fire which results in your excommunication.

On how to gain and lose badboy points, check the FAQ

I am not sure if there are any ill effects to warring on the Papal States. Taking Rome will probably give you events to give it back to the Pope or Else. This happens if the Papal States do not exist elsewhere. So if you leave some county somewhere for the Pope to live, then there are no problems.

BB reduce over time. The speed depends on your Piety score. The higher it is, the faster it goes :)

Also you loose about 1/3 when your ruler dies.
