How to colonise?

Okay I know this sounds like a stupid question but...

I declared a colonization war on a ruin next to me...
Raised an army of 10,000...
Move the army to the ruin...
Can't "assault" the ruin for 18517 days....
Despite the ruin only having 937 troops the siege is still displayed as abandoned and won't proceed any further...

Any help with this would be much appreciated, I have already read the dev diary and it is lacking any information in regard to this direct area. All the dev diary says is to declare war and get your peace to colonize.

sorry, looks like I jsut randomly won the siege. Patience was needed.

Currently, ruins posses an absurdly high fort level.

Ruins were given high fort levels to stop an exploit where ironborn/pirates could loot them for lots of gold. When colonising, or 'sieging', them the fort level is removed, but it is not instantaneous. You may have to wait a bit for it to happen.
