And they said it couldn't be done:

I found a workaround on my MacBook Pro 2015.

Before starting a new campaign go to settings from the main menu and turn map objects OFF.

This stopped the game from crashing and I was able to play...albeit very slowly.

This worked for me, and performance is fine (probably because I have a relatively new Macbook). I can play I:R again, though I obviously won't be paying for DLC when I know it could break again in the next patch and they won't even try to fix it.

Has to be said that Paradox has really dropped the ball here. I love these games, so I'm happy to be able to play again, but the way the devs have dealt with this has left a bitter taste.

My suspicion is that the 'Drill Army' animation is what broke the game on Macs. I'm no expert when it comes to tech, but I find it strange that a hardware issue can be resolved by changing a non-essential setting...

They burned a lot of player goodwill for no reason over a bug that can be fixed by adjusting a menu setting. And it required a player to figure it out, when a developer could have found this in five minutes. I wonder if any of this is getting through to actual decision-makers at PDS.

The total lack of response to this post by PDS is very telling. Here's what would happen at a less dysfunctional company:

"PDS Person: Hey, jakajamahama, thanks for figuring out that a single menu setting will fix the thing we mistakenly identified as a "hardware issue" and allowing everyone with a Macbook to resume playing our game! We'll be sure to tweet this out and put it on FB and other social media platforms so everyone is aware of the fix."

Instead: Silence. I don't know if that's because PDS really, really, really just doesn't give a crap or if it's because the issue never rose above the level of employees (or volunteers? I don't know) who just wanted us to shut up about it.
