Hi, I bought Rome Gold a while ago, but waited for the new patch to start playing.

Some problems and observations:

- An admiral was taken hostage by Epirus, he's now a prisoner there, but I can't get him out, whether it's peace or war. The senate is kind of supportive (Yellow), but I still can't choose the option. What can I do?

- I have some guys with martial 8, but I can't make them general/admiral. Is it that only former rulers or something can lead an army/navy?

- Any spouse has a skull in the right bottom corner of his/her image. I assume that should mean they are dead, but they are not - shows even on the wedding day. Seems to be a bug... is that a known one?

- After a long siege (already 100%), I got sick of waiting and assaulted. I took losses, then I got the message that the siege ended - I got the province and my army was back at full strength immediately. A bug? Did it happen because - accidently - the siege would have ended even without the assault, hence the assault was not considered by the game, but just the outcome of the normal siege?

Thanks a lot.

- I'm not sure about the prisoner policies in the game, you can release a prisoner when you have one but I don't know if AI actually ever agrees to release any of your guys.

- If playing with republic the generals need to be former rulers or cencors (possibly some other titles work too but I can't remember) and they need to be old enough, the main trouble with republics is usually just that, you have guys with 9 martial but they can't be appointed to anything and the only people who can be generals are 80 year old populists with 1-5 martial...

- With the 2.35 patch came the bug that all characters (except the one you're looking at) have the skull in their thumbnail. It can be a little troublesome when some characters are really dead and some not.

- Did the month change? If yes then the reinforcements arrived and possibly filled the army again, otherwise sounds like a bug to me..

Hopefully the answers helped a bit :p

Thank you Wave.

About the prisoner: The AI didn't even have the chance to deny my request, since I couldn't even make it. Although the Senate was ok about it, I couldn't even choose the option in the menu. (That lighter grey layer was missing)

The siege n assault: I had heavy losses, reinforcements could not have filled them in one month only. Must have been a bug.

And thanks for the assign-a-military-leader help. You are totally right about that.

It's a great game I must say. Seems like playing republics, monarchies and tribes must feel quite different (have only started with Rome yet). How come, it's not as popular as other PI games?

I have always wondered why it isn't as popular as other games, too -- I feel that somehow it should have been. Maybe people identify more to games closer to the present, like HOI3. Even CK2's map is filled with cities that you can locate today (most with nearly the same name). Maybe the constant juggling required to run Rome’s republics soured too many people on first glimpse. This game took me a few tries to get into, but it was worth it. After giving it a shot, turned out to be one of my all-time favorites.

Some people will say that blobbing is a problem for Rome (the tendency for one nation to gobble up everything on the map and inexorably work its way towards you). Personally I think the people who argue strongly against blobbing often overlook how rewarding it can be to build a blob, and how frustrating it is to lose 1/2 of it overnight at no fault of your own. (That has happened to me in CK2 quite a lot, so much so that I needed to give it a rest.) In Rome you have anti-blobbing events like Civil Wars, but more often than not the old government survives. The people who really benefit from civil wars are the neighbors of the country having the war, who take advantage of the situation – and rightly so.

One could argue Rome’s colonization system is a little tedious – interspersed with random moments of disaster. I personally welcome the challenge of the unknown. Games where the whole world is civilized you pretty much know what you are going to get coming up against you.

I also really enjoy the character interactions and the showstopping events that can happen as a result. My favorite was having a powerful governor revolt after his wife gave birth to my child, in the most critical part of a war that wasn’t going well against a stronger enemy. Lastly I really enjoy the open-endedness of the period. The fact that a cultures can spread and evolve into places where they didn’t historically is fun to take part in. Empires come and go throughout the course of a game, and nothing is set in stone. All in all, Rome is a great game, and I hope PI eventually works up a sequel.

I've only started playing it, but I can imagine that I will be enjoying the different aspects of the game as you do. Despite the lack of experience, I already do. I don't think though that the period is not as attractive to many players as later ones. Consider how popular Rome Total War has been, and the hype that the announcement of Rome 2 has created. Hoperfully, there will be a EU Rome 2 as well.
