(copied from my guide at the steamforums)
Hi everyone and especially hi to all new players.
I will try to make this as complete as possible, so there are no more questions left on how to get along in this game.
So, you started Starvoid and you are watching the main sceen. You will notice some sections there.
Home
Here you get the latest info from the devs. On the left side you can pick a topic and read about it at the right side.
Play
You can select a battletype (Battle/Sabotage/TDM) and click on "Start search" to let the game automaticly search for a game and put you in it. You cannot select a map here!
Find game
Here you see all active servers, showing all relevant information like Ping, Servername, (number of) Players, Gamemode and Map.
You are able to sort each column de- or ascending. Once you decided, doubleclick the server or click join down right.
Further you can choose to select "No empty", "No full" and "No Password" servers at the bottom of the screen.
If you want you can manually Refresh or Cancel refresh and the right side, just above the Join button.
Armory
Lots of information to share here and probably the most important screen in the whole game. Why?
Because a decent build is the most important thing to have in Starvoid. Randomly adding some units and other things will get you nowhere, except for being frustrated by getting killed all the time.
On the left side you see "Select contract".
This is the main overview of the loadouts you created, with a maximum of 4.
Clicking on it will change the right side of the screen, where you can see the detailed information about the selected contract.
Now for the right side.
First of all there is a picture of your commander, your most important "unit". Be aware: If the commander dies in battle, all other units will die too! So keeping him alive is crucial to victory!
Clicking it´s avatar will open a menu on the left side where you can choose between 4 classes with each 2 commanders. One commander in every class is for free, the other one is DLC.
The for classes are:
- Infiltration: They do have stealth abilities to enter/escape battle
- Engineer: Can repair units or grant them a shield
- Ordnance: Sniper with high range or the possibility to mark a target to receive extra damage
- Assault: Has the highest base protection and has also the highest damage output
For more information about them, read the descriptions carefully. Don´t worry if you don´t like your choice, you can change as often as you want without any charges.
Next point are the3 slots called "Commander gear".
Clicking them will let you choose:
- a primary weapon (some are DLC), each with different abilities
- some kind of armor
- a special ability
As mentioned above: read carefully and select something fitting your playstyle
Specs are in the next row to select. Specs mean even more ways to personalize your commander. These are passive abilities that eg let you and your units run faster or deal more damage. There are 3 to pic. Choose wisely! And watch out when buying them, not all are available to all commander classes.
Last comes the unit and utility selection part. Click on a unit symbol to open the selection screen on the left side. Here you can choose between several categories, each revealing the units or utilities in it. There is a detailed description for each of them as well as showing it´s pros and cons, weapon damage, special abilities and so on.
Remark: Most utilities have a cooldown, be sure to watch that too.
Unit/utility overview in detail:
In the top row you will see 3 or 4 things:
- a lightning and a number in blue. This is the amount of energy you need to spawn a unit. Energy regenerates pretty fast, so this number isn´t that important.
- 3 dots and a number. This is called upkeep. You have 100 upkeep in total. So it´s useful to try and make a setup getting as close to 100 as possible to get the most out of it. You will notice you will get to 100 pretty fast, 3-4 units normally. Keep in mind your units will die and have a cooldown after that. So picking some more units in your build to compensate dead units is advised!
- # and a number. The number of people, vehicle, ... that will spawn. Some have only 1, some 4 or even more.
- Utilities also show a star. The star is your Bounty. You gain this from killing off enemy units and is used for some abilities.
So now you know about units and utilities. But you will notice that after selecting a unit, another screen will open in most cases. Here you can select special abilities or equipment for your units. Some are passive, some active and some change the weapons. Lots of different choices and many of them are restricted for only a few (or even a single) units only.
Don´t get discouraged, you gain ingame currency pretty fast and after almost each round you will be able to at least buy one upgrade.
After you are done with all of this, remember to save your contract and, if you want, rename it (click confirm, hitting enter won´t work).
Challenges
Overview of your achievements, showing how far you´re advanced in each of them and what you will get for it.
Shop
The same thing you already know but without the detour through the armory screen.
Stats

Settings

Friendlist
You can form a party with your Steam friends by inviting them from your Launcher. If the party leader (the person inviting the others) joins a server, all party members will be asked if they want to join the same server - if they do, you join as a party. Players in a party are not split up due to team scramble. (thx Laxn)
Gameplay modes
- Battle
The aim is to conquer as many bases as possible and holding them. Each base gives you some points over time. More bases = more points. Most points at the end of the round = win! Only your commander can cap a point, remember that. More commanders means faster capping a point.
There is a possibility to win a round instantly by capturing all basepoints.
Basepoints with a red round symbol above it can´t be captured! You have to capture in order. Bases that can be captured will blink green on your minimap.
DON´T enter the enemies mainbase (top and bottom ones)! The huge cannons there will kill you before you can say ouch!
- Team Deathmatch
You spawn randomly on the map. Goal is to kill more enemy commanders as the other team.
- Sabotage
Your commander spawns with a number of 'RadKits'. Take those to the facility exhausts close to the enemy base and drop them off by remaining close to it long enough. You may also collect additional RadKits dropped by other players or by destroyed units. When you have dropped off your RadKits, you will withdraw from combat and respawn back in base with new RadKits. Droping off RadKits reduces the enemy teams score. Most score after 10 minutes wins, or if a team reaches 0 score, the other team wins. (Taken from official forums by RasmusDavidsson)
In each mode (probably also in sabotage) there will spawn some upgrades. A few seconds before they appear, it will be indicated on the minimap where they will do so. After appearing they are permanently shown on the minimap.
You can capture these upgrade just like a base point by getting close to it with your commander. The commander getting it will get some additional reward points (not relevant for winning the round), however, the buff will be available for everyone in the team.
The upgrades will disappear after one minute. So if you didn´t get them, too bad, they´re gone now.
Tips
- Sometimes all your units are gone and on cooldown and it would take too long to wait for them to come back. In this occasion (and ONLY in this occasion!) it can be useful to let your commander die and respawn again. After respawn all your cooldowns are back to 0.
- If you are playing the game mode "Battle", capturing a extraction point instantly finishes all your "box" cooldowns (units and utility abilities). (Thx tessm)
- Your unit upgrades as well as your specs and commander gear will reach an advanced version of itself after a while, making it even better. Some get rid of the disadvantages, some deal more damage and so on. This is shown in the "Plus version" you see grayed out when first buying it. At the buttom of the description screen you see how close you are to an upgrade.
- Don´t wait in the base until all your units are spawned! I see many newbies do that. Just don´t do it. It´s a waste of time and gives the other team the possibility to already cap some points while you are just standing there.
- Fastspawn your units by simply doubleclicking the number on your keyboard or the icon. There normally is no need to place them accurrately (except for turrets, they have a target area, indicated by the blue shine).
- After spawning units don´t forget to select them while you advance! Easiest way to do so is the key left of 1.
- Teamchat: Shift + Enter to activate teamchat. Need to do this for every message.
- Same effects don´t add. There are a few effects that stacks, like the buff from D-Shell Armor, Husker Pistols, Vyper, Frenzy Module, the debuff from Silver Bills and so on... but unless otherwise stated, they don't. Nor does the "Slow" effect stack with itself, so for example a Quake Hammer slow and a Piledriver's 9-Irons slow would not stack since it is the same slow effect. Different slow effects however does stack, so a unit with Electrocution, Slow, Pinning and Cripple on it would have 4 different speed reducing effects on it, and all would have effect.
Exception: pinning! Pinning stacks!(Thx Laxn)
- Pinning makes you take more damage and stacks. Do not stay in-front of Enemy's pinning you, it will quickly lead to a deathtrap. (Thx Lillarpy - official forums)
- More info about pinning: Pinning doesn't stack for each time it is applied, instead it stacks over time. One stack is applied for each second the effect is active, to a maximum of 20 stacks. The effect now slows a unit down by a percentage value (by 65%), and still halves it's rate of fire. But each stack also increases the damage the unit takes by 5%. So the longer a unit has been pinning, the more damage does it take for all sources, so make sure to get out of pinning! (Thx RasmusDavidsson, official forums)
- Damage types & damage dealt to x.
The numbers listed are the damage against Light, Medium, Heavy, SuperHeavy, and Commander, respectively. (Stolen from Spootz, official forums)
Physical -- 100% 100% 75% 50% 50%
Shotgun -- 150% 100% 50% 25% 50%
AP -- 50% 50% 100% 200% 25%
Impact -- 100% 100% 75% 75% 50%
Energy -- 75% 100% 150% 100% 50%
Fire -- 200% 100% 50% 25% 50%
Electric -- 100% 100% 100% 75% 50%
Acid -- 100% 100% 100% 100% 50%
Absolute -- 100% 100% 100% 100% 100%
Burning. Does damage over time.
Acid Corrosion. Does damage over time.
Electrocution. Slows target.
Dire Damage. Stops the opponent from healing.
- In Battle you capture points quicker the more allied commanders you have at that point. Also all commanders gain the "Finished box-cooldown"-bonus (all CDs are back to 0) on all units. Teamwork is the key. Also sometimes if you see a allied commander rushing towards your point and you will capture it before he/she reaches it you can just step out of the point, wait in your ally and than capture it together to both gain the bonus; It is the Gentleman way. (Thx Lillarpy - official forums)
- Recall - Another powerful ally. Pressing the Delete key on a unit will start the recall effect. If the unit is successfully recalled that unit will be teleported off the battlefield but you only suffer a 50% cool-down on that unit. Also you deny the enemy the bounty on that unit. As quickly as you try to recall a unit that unit will be immobilized and won't attack anymore until it is either teleported off the battlefield, or damaged; if it is damaged it will go back into your control and the recall-effect is off. Remember this when you have very injuried units, it may be better to recall them than to throw them into battle. (Thx Lillarpy - official forums)
- Damage-boosters also effect abilities. So for example Cleburne's Juggernaut both increase the damage he deals with 150%, and decrease incoming damage he takes with 50%. So if you are armed with the mighty quake-hammer it is often a good idea to use the Juggernaut ability before the Quakeslam for a nice 50% extra damage for the ability. (Thx Lillarpy - official forums)
Questions answered
Q: When I was playing this morning it was a little tough to locate and target an enemy commander among the melee and fire. What's a good way to easily find the enemy commander in the crowd? Is there a target enemy commander hot Key?Or is this just something you pick up on as you play more matches?
A: Well it´s the only enemy unit with a name above his/her head, so that should help. (They are looking into that matter though, maybe there will be some "target commander" thingy later on)
