Playing the original game with no expansions (couldn't resist the $5 price!). The first few quests give you new units, but after that i need a larger army to continue, and can't figure out how to recruit or to add replacements to existing units.

How do you do it?

When you move a unit to a large enough city and select it, there should be a ship icon. This means recruit new units.

OK, I just installed the Saxons expansion, and I can recruit in my first province by right-clicking and bringing up the ship icon. No problem there.

But going back to my original game, right-clicking bulidings and settlements (in Winter) doesn't do anything. Do I need to be at a certain level before I'm able to recruit? Do I not have big enough settlements? My whole army barely has 100 men in it and is unable to beat any opponent without more units. What am I missing?

At act 1 (first book) you can't recruit units before quest to conquer London or this second capital (Dont remember the name), you need to make quests before you will be able to make new units.

Thanks Nitrox, that explains it.

The only question now is what can i do with my tiny army in the meantime. Are there any quick quests i can use to gain units?

Well i made a mistake - forgive me. When you will get quest for Conquer London/This second province you will can make army, you just need to making quest with tiny army and get fast as can to Conquer quest for unit produce.

If I remember correctly, the Excalibur quest will allow you to recruit freely. However, at one and only one point before that, you will have a one time chance to recruit units or refill your stacks via a quest (plus, other quests will usually reward you with units). If you do not have enough troops to tackle the first few quests before excalibur, I guess it is time for a restart. You can do these quests with minimal losses with a bit of experience - this game as a steep learning curve.

Checked and agreed with that. ;)
