How to retreat?

This is the first time I tried to retreat... Seems easy enough go to the arrows?.... I remember the tutorial talking about it...

Some enemy has just attacked my scout. I am at the arrows but nothing happens... no option to retreat? what am I missing? Nothing about it in the in-game manual.

Have your scout stand on the arrows, not next to them. Wait, unless you're the defender, you cannot retreat, the retreat is the option of attackers only.

Thanks, yes I was the defender.

I would prefer having the option to retreat but I guess running after a weaker army of the AI would also be annoying.
