I'm most very new to HOI and have the Anthology installed.

I am working at learning this game with the objective of being confident enough to someday, start playing multiplayer.

I have some questions.
1. What mods and or adjustments can I make to the game, graphics, key map, etc etc and still be able to qualify my installation as valid for mp?

2. I assume pausing a lot is considered a no no in mp. What game speed is most often used in mp? I'd like to begin playing at a speed useful in mp to get my habits well set so I don't be a big idjit later on.

Last q but not mp related...

I also play EU3. Not enough to be good at it and not as mp, but in that forum, some questions about game play were kept in mp section so the pirates and mooches couldn't read them in the open forum. Is that true here too?

I'll ask this as a test question in that regard...

Unit stacks: This game more of a rock/paper/scissors thing where stacks are best kept single unit type? or is a combined arms mix stack worth developing?

And, just in case anyone's curious....no, I'm not ready for mp yet. I have not yet managed to get a blitzkrieg more than 3 provinces deep into France without getting it cut off and starved into submission. Yeah, I'm that lame atm.

Pausing a lot is indeed irritating for the other players when playing MP. Especially since most large wartime situations are played at Below Normal or even slow -- this has much to do with the Upload capacity of of the host as anything else, especially when deep into the Barbarossa era of the war.

About mods, most mods that do things to your sprites or change the colours and graphics of your game do not interfere with your ability to play MP.

The big issue with MP is host speed, and also router set up. New players often don't have their router set up properly and can not communicate with the host. It takes a little fidlling around and you will get it sooner or later.

If you have problems connecting to the host, or hosting check this thread: Step by step router set up; or you can ask this Lord Ederon for help over here: Domain of Lord Ederon.

The best way to set up games, I find is to do it through any of the many HOI forums, such as the HOI Haven for addicted players, Lord Ederon's forum that I just linked too, or The Warplan Orange site for HOI DD 1.3a, and this forum as well. This is usually better than trying to start games in Valky, as most are pre-arranged, though that can be a good way to pick up quick scenario, or sub in for a lost player, or just meet people and ask question. But if you are in for a long game, best to sign up here first on a game thread or at one of the other forums.

Good info, thanks.

Thanks.

I'd read the manual and much of the wiki before asking. Everything seemed to point toward just going speed samey same as you said about inf. But I also ran across references to the combined arms and wondered how that worked.

Now I know. Maybe I can invade Poland without having to play chase the counter attacker again. Still working on that. I swear, the enemy laughs when they hear my tanks coming. They know they can retreat and eventually I'll just get myself surrounded and cut off.

sometimes pausing is necessary. like when u gotta put up 100 air wings prior to an invasion. im sure cueball would agree with this hahahahahaha

From Mr. pause-a-matic. Don't listen to him, pause as little as possible, the only reason Mr. Khan needs to pause for air is because he likes to exploit the mass air effect. Nothing more. If he didn't pause he couldn't do it.

I play with Mighty G on a regular basis, and he hardly pauses ever. I didn't notice SE pausing a whole lot either.
