I bought this game because I really miss the old Medieval: Total War game from back in the day. And, I really liked Stellaris...I don't mind the commitment of a "in-depth" game. However, I've tried to start numerous games...and, of course, I got smoked rather early.

Well, ya learn from each one...and pretty soon I have a really good start to the game. The PROBLEM IS...every time my leader dies, I have to partition all the holdings to several nieces, nephews, brothers, aunts... Now, I KNOW...you can change the partition so this doesn't happen...but every time I try, it says that some of my vassals don't like that idea (no duh) so I can't do it! Instead, I just play as one heir after another...each time gaining ground, then giving it all away.

I 'thought' I had a fix when I ended up with 9/9 counties/holdings and only one male heir...only two older sisters. NOPE. I ended up with the capital and one other county...the other 7 got handed out...2 to one sister, 2 to another sister, 2 to an aunt, and one to some half-brother.

I'm trying to get back in the game...by marrying one of my aunts...so that I can at least get to 4 counties/holdings...but by the time she dies, it'll be time to partition again!! I suppose I could 'murder' her...but I can only imagine the stress penalty I'd get to pull that off...IF it succeeds in the first place.

I haven't seen any 'bugs' yet...although I'm kinda terrified after reading all these posts in here. I'm on an X Series, not a PS5. I liked my PS4, I just like the game catalog of Xbox a little more. I did notice (suggestion) that the "Save" screen is difficult to use. If I try to "save" a game (without exiting), it'll say there's no space and I need to overwrite saved files. BUT, it doesn't give you the ability to go through and delete any saved games (unless it's in a different menu). And when you try to overwrite a saved game...you end up renaming your save to the name of the save you're deleting.

But, who knows. I played multiple games before even realizing that holding down the left button opens up that circular screen. I haven't figured out how to look at your "gallery of rulers" (the thing you see when your player dies...showing him and previous rulers). I found the "tree"...but not the gallery.

Hopefully it stays "bug free". Too bad it doesn't have the battle screen that Medieval Total War had...where you could control the armies. But, (so far...knocking on wood) there haven't been bad bugs like I had when I played Braveheart. That game had tremendous potential (especially for the time period)...but the bugs made it almost unplayable.

It all depends on your succession law. It's hard to advice anything without knowing what succession law you have.

My tactics to deal with gavelkind (Confederate Partition) succession, which tries to split holding more or less equally between all heirs, assuming I'm a king, is to have my capital in possibly the biggest (county wise) duchy. This duchy will be my core realm I want my heir to inherit and I'll build buildings .etc only there. After that I try to have at last one duchy and one county in such duchy for each of the rest of my children. That way my primary heir will get duchy and 3-4 counties, and my other children will get duchy and 1 county in that duchy. To not get penalty for holding to many duchies or to many counties, you can give these counties and duchies to your other children before hand. It's in the end it's important to remember to have 1 duchy (with county in that duchy) for each of your children, to not have your core duchy partitioned.

Example:
I'm a king of Poland with my capital in Kraków in Lesser Poland duchy.
Lesser Poland have 7 counties and I have all of them, so I have 1 kingdom title, 1 duchy title, 7 counties titles.
I have 3 children, my primary heir and his two younger brothers.
I want my primary child to inherit these 7 counties which I developed, but now, my other children will inherit some of these 7 counties.
I stripped my vassal of Mazovia duchy (thanks to finding out him being a murderer) from his duchy and 2 counties in that duchy.
I also conquered new land of Pomeriana duchy with two counties from infidels.
Now I have 1 kingdom title, 3 duchy titles and 11 county titles which is over my holding limit.
I gave duchy of Mazovia and counties within it to my second child, and duchy of Pomeriana and counties in it to my third child.
Now my primary heir will inherit of my initial titles, 1 kingdom title, 1 duchy title of Lesser Poland and all 7 counties in it, because my other children already got from me their duchy titles.

There are some problems with this tactic however. First is if your realm is big enough you have more than one kingdom, or you have enough land to create another kingdom title. In such case, your other child will inherit the second kingdom title and de jure vassals of such kingdom. I believe you can wage war for such lost kingdom title as you get strong claim, but I'm not 100% sure as I haven't played CK3 for some time now (bugs on PS5). Now, if you're not a king, gaining king title should be your main goal if you want to stop losing land every time your ruler dies.

Now, you may also encounter a problem with not being able to give duchy/counties to your other children because of your council members. You have then two choices. First is to try befriend your council member using lifestyles, or to appoint to council your friends. The second option is try to find a hook on your council member by using your spymaster Find Secrets task. Your council members can also have an accident...

1. Start in an area with male preference succession
2. Disinherit any male other than your first born (or save scum to only have daughters)
3. Make a duchy title so the lands that do manage to be given out remain in your realm.
4. If you manage to get more territory for two potential duchies, try to push for the kingdom title before death
5. If all else fails your player character should have a claim against his relatives.
6. By the time you make it to a kingdom (assuming you are your dynasty head) you won’t have to worry about it anymore, multiple kingdoms ruled by your family will greatly increase dynasty scores and any heir can immediately declare war on his sibling, call all others to the war, and repeat one by one to reclaim titles

Thanks All!!

I managed to (finally) get out of the problem. I did some swaying of vassals and eventually was able to change the succession law to Primogeniture...and then I could keep all of them when the leader died.

My game just finished...it go to 1443 (or something like that) and the game timed out.

I played as a county holder in Northern France and became the Duke of Neustria. Eventually, very late in the game, I became King of Cordoba...after the 5th crusade resulted in acquiring Cordoba. The Pope made my players mother the Queen, then it got passed to my character. But, I only had maybe 5 years and then the game ended.

Earlier games I tried to play as Irish, Scottish, English, French, and German...but they got smoked pretty fast. I'm probably gonna start a new game soon. Hopefully, I've learned enough that I can get to a Kingdom with more than just 5 years left.

Try starting as a tribal government in Scandinavia in the 866 start date, it should be way easier to become a king there. Or you could pledge to one of the more powerful jarls until they become a king and push for yourself or your successor to be king in the election. As a tribal government, its far easier to claim territory.
