Summary

I have tried multiple betas of the game and I am getting boot crashes and CTD crashes constantly.

Description

Recently purchased Spheres of Influence and since I have purchased the DLC, I have been unable to keep the game playing for more than 3-5 minutes. I have tried, verify game cache, re-installing, opting into older versions of the game. Everything results in a CTD. The game is completely unplayable in this state. Right now, it won't even boot, I get the first loading page and the game crashes. Previously I was starting a game as USA and getting about 5 minutes in before CTD. I don't recall having this problem prior to installing the DLC. I tried to disable the DLC and still getting the same issue. I'm not sure what else to do. I've tried running in debug mode. I've tried running as a admin, I've tried to disable fullscreen optimization and vsync. I've cleared my DirectX cache, my shader cache.

Steps to reproduce

Right click on victoria3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.

Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help:

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/pdx_settings.json .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria3/crashes/ folder, attach here the latest (only!) exceptions.txt

DxDiag should be attached. Thank you for your assistance, Vicky3.exe settings are set to these settings currently.

The only thing I can see there likely to cause this is a shortage of available memory:
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16334MB RAM
Page File: 17881MB used, 3953MB available
Please expand your Windows paging file maximum size to 32gb
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/openpag...increasing-paging-file-size-windows-computers
AND exit every other app you can before starting the game.

BUT your C: drive is too full, you'll need to clear space on it to be able to do the above and/or extend or move your paging file to D: and/or E: - if they are SSDs also. Windows is fine if it is on multiple drives.

Good luck!

Windows likes at least 10% free on its boot drive, as working space. But we want to clear more than that if possible. If you go into Disk Cleanup, Clean Up System Files, that is a good start.

But, as I say, the paging file can be on 2 or 3 drives, no problem, as long as they are SSDs not hard disks.

The game needed more memory than Windows had available. Windows tried to page out other stuff to your swap file but there was not enough room on C: to expand the swap file.

Freeing up space allowed Windows to swap stuff out so the game had enough free memory to run. Especially, writing out a save file consumes memory until completed.
