  • Crusader Kings II
I am playing King Malcolm of Scotland early game (using 1.03b). The Pope called a crusade against Urgell in Barcelona, and I decided to join in. I declared war for the crusade for Barcelona (only crusade option available, highlighted the whole duchy including Urgell.)

So, I called in my Holy Roman Empire allies and headed to southern France. It appeared that there there were separate crusade forces from other empires which were not part of our particular crusade war (their armies were gray for example) who were fighting the Muslim forces in the area.

So I conquered Urgell and Empuries counties and their contents entirely, making sure that I had tagged the seiges when some of the other empires showed up. The Holy Roman Empire conquered some others like Barcelona proper, and other empires were also sieging some of the area.

So, it appeared that all of the Duchy of Barcelona was fully conquered, and the Emir sued for peace, supposed to cede all of the conquered territories, and I accepted. I got the counties of Urgell and Empuries, all of the others in the duchy reverted to the Emir and no longer indicated the stripes indicating that they were conquered. However, the other crusade is still going and fighting the Emir's troops.

I also got a notice that I had the wrong types of holdings (after I had dealt with Urgell and Empuries). I looked around and noticed that I had some cities and such within the counties of Barcelona and the county to the north-west, but do not control the counties, they are still under the Emir.

Now the banner by my character portrait says the Pope has called a crusade against King Malcolm of Scotland for Urgell.

I haven't progressed on past this point to see what would happen as a result. I'll try that next now that I've archived the save.

The crusade was shortly declared over by the pope, and the indication of it targeting me left without incident.

Subsequently, the counties of Lleida and Barcelona were conquered and annexed by the Duchy of Toulouse, who I was not at war with. I still have a city and bishopric in the former, and a barony in the latter. Is this intended behavior? Is the county owner considered the liege of the contained city/barony?

The terms used by the game to say what you'll get when you win a holy war are very confusing. It says something like "All captured or unoccupied holdings". What that means is that you get the whole de jure duchy, minus any holdings that have been captured by somebody else. So in your case, you got some holdings in Lleida and Barcelona, because they were the ones that were not yet completely besieged by another crusading ruler.

At least, that's how I think it goes. Like I said, it can be quite confusing. It would be a great addition to make the tooltips and Casus Belli description text more clear!
