I'm not sure it's a solution but after various CTD (I can't see any specific element as year or new ruler sorry)
I saw this :
- CTD
- I reload the game (can crash again)
- I tried to restore a saved game (always crash)
And then tried this :
- Go to
C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Crusader Kings\scenarios\save games
(or any repertory with your CK saved games)
- Found 5 files (number doesn't mind)
autosave.eug 15 126 Ko
autosave.eug.cfg 1 Ko
Comté de Holstein_1123_juillet_16.eug Fichier EUG
Comté de Holstein_1123_juillet_16.eug.cfg Fichier CFG
oldautosave.eug Fichier EUG 14 624 Ko
- Delete the .cfg files
(if any doubt look at the couples of files with the same name and delete the smaller in ko)
- Never seen any oldautosave CFG (.eug.cfg) file.
Then I was able to launch game and saved games without CTD.
- More : perhaps no luck but I experienced one CTD with an automatic update which launched internet connexion in a game (Win XP pro sp2 IE5).
Perhaps automatic reconnect after disconnect from web can cause CTD too, disable it? :p

Thanks for any comment validating (or not) these points.

EDIT : IMPORTANT don't delete these files if no CTD, I don't try it, your risk :D.

Does this work for everybody? If so then it sounds like excellent news!

What do you mean? Do you need to have the CD in the drive to do this?

- Sorry (french speaking / bad english :D ), I meant that people can try to go to the saved games folder and delete CFG files BEFORE they had any CTD (to prevent them perhaps).
As I didn't try it atm I can't say what would happened... :)
- I'm currently on the grand campaign waiting for any CTD (Gent County around 1100).
- Hope it'll work at least for some players.

Well, I had a CTD on the grand campaign in 1105. Seemingly unrelated to inheritance, battles/sieges, or claims held by dead guys. So I tried deleting the cfg files thinking 'what could it hurt?'

I'm happy to say that I've continued from the autosave for several years with no problems. I think this is worth looking into.

Oh, didn't notice the T between the C and the D.

Seems like this works for other folks as well

Any background process you leave running can cause CTD. Especially in MP you should disable everything not absolutely important for Windows to run (for example Windows Updater, anti-virus programs, software firewalls, instant message programs etc should be disabled).

The .cfg thing is interesting. Hopefully that will solve some of the odd CTD's :)
