Information

I have verifed my game files (Steam only)

Yes

I have disabled all mods

Yes

I am running the latest game update

Yes

Required

Summary

If my heir becomes regent, he stops being my player heir until I appoint another regent

Description

When I began a trip abroad, I got the notification that I had a new player heir. As my first-born son was still alive and kicking, I tried to find another reason why he wasn't player heir anymore (gender laws, etc.).

What fixed it was appointing another regent, which made my oldest son the player heir again.

It thus seems that having your player heir becoming your regent disqualifies him from inheriting.

Steps to reproduce

Appoint your player heir regent, then start traveling abroad. Appointing another regent makes them eligible to inherit again.

See attached save game.

Hi! We were unable to reproduce the issue, do you happen to have a save before the issue occurred ?
Cheers!
[See Edit 2 below for an update and TLDR;]

I went back to some earlier saves, and it seems the issue might be different from what I first thought, and that it coincided with me traveling abroad was just by chance and not the cause. It is thus more of an heir rather than a regency bug.

After some more experimentation, I am now able to reproduce my player heir changing. In the save game I have attached, the situation is the following:

  1. My player heir is on my council as my Volkhv. That alone did not change his eligibility as heir, as he had been in that position for some time (he also does not have any disinherited or monk traits). If Volkhvs of that faith are not eligible for inheritance, it is weird that it takes such a long time after his appointment to actually come into effect and that it coincides with the following popup:
  2. If you open the save file, there will be a popup from a holy order that wants to lease a holding. As soon as I accept (first option), I get the notification that my player heir changed. I cannot find the link between the holy order, the Volkhv and my player heir, as my heir/Volkv is not involved in the holy order or the leased holding in any way.
  3. The weird part is: Even if I ignore the popup from the holy order (do not choose any of the options, just leave it open), the player heir change notification pops up if I simply open the realm menu (F2). Just opening the menu while the request is open results in my player heir changing, so it does not seem to be related to actually replying to the holy order message.

If I load the save file attached to this post, I can reproduce the issue every single time. Either accepting the holy order request or simply opening the realm menu results in my heir changing.

If you need more info, I can experiment a bit more. I have an earlier save that I can play up to this point and it is possible to reproduce the issue from there.

EDIT: I considered editing the original post, but I did not want to mess with your system. Please let me know if you want me to make a new post for this.

EDIT 2: So after going back again to an earlier save and experimenting some more, it does indeed seem that my player heir being my Volkhv is the issue. However: as long as I do not open the realm menu, he is still my heir. Only the moment I click on the realm menu, the line of succession is updated. Maybe this is why the first time it happened to me was during the regency, because the game checked the line of succession, found a character who was not eligible and then updated everything.

So I guess the issue is simply the game recognizing that my heir is actually a Volkhv. If Volkhvs not being eligible for succession is working as designed, then maybe there is a way to communicate this to the player ("Appointing your heir to this position will disinherit them! Are you sure you want to proceed?"). It is weird, however, that I was able to get my original heir back in after some time. So appointing them as Volkhv does not make them ineligible permanently, it seems.

Furthermore, if the game updated the line of succession immediately after appointing my heir to a position that makes him/her ineligible, there would be less confusion for the player. As I am not sure if this is WAD or a bug, I will leave this long post here.
Sorry for wall of text!

Just for the sake of completion (and apologies if this is TMI), I have attached an additional save, exactly one day before I am able to fire my son from the position of Volkhv again.

Open the game, let one day pass, assign another Volkhv, and the same thing will happen as before, only in reverse: as long as the player does not touch the realm menu, the line of succession is not updated. Only if the player interacts with the realm menu (or a related system, like regencies), the game registers that it has to update the line of succession. This probably explains why I first wrongly attributed the issue as being a regency issue.
