Wasn't in the FAQ, but one of the alliances at the start (I think it was Hanse or in that area) had an expiration date of something like 1542. Is this by design or a bug?

Yep. First I wanted to set it to an even later date (the last Hansetag), but then I decided to set it somewhat earlier. But when I set it to 1502 or so , the Hansebund always disolved way too fast (because there´s normally no war for the members to participate during the early years of the game).
