I thought it would be a good idea to provide an extra thread for revisiting CB shield distribution for various countries in the game.

Please note that 'CB shield' doesn´t mean that a country 'really' has a CB on a given province. We also will avoid the misleading concept 'national province'/'core province'. Instead we should ask the questions:

1) Where should a given country be likely to expand?
2) Where should the expansion of a given country meet/not meet heavy local resistance?

Post away, folks! :)

Don't know if you've read this in the IGC Province Topic...
According to that map you mentioned, perhaps you can add a CB-shield for Navarra on Béarn!?

@Dipo: Yes, that´s why adding a CB shield there doesn´t make THAT much sense (also there´s no nationalism in this region). On the other hand, if e.g. Ayutthaya put up a colony there, THEN Dai Viet could have a go at them for free. So it´s maybe not so bad an idea after all... :)
@Leprechaun: I will collect some more suggestions (and await discussion) before adding them in one session. :)

Hartmann,

I have read about the proposed change for Austria having CB shields for Hungary...
I disagree; maybe it apears obvious now but in 1492 the Grand Duchy of Austria was very much a German state with intrests in northern Italy.
To a large extent only Ottoman aggression in Hungary ,the resulting dissaloution of the Hungarian state, and the Marriage bonds from Austria caused the Austrians to look this way. I guess i should also mention the huge Ottoman army outside the palace in Vienna. ;)

In other words i don't think that Austria ahould have CB shields for anything except the HRE provinces. While i agree that a nationalist Germany was not to likely in this period, i do believe that the various Grand Dukes would try to put together an HRE in fact as well as name.

Although I agree, that Austrian interests at the start of the GC were in fact directed somewhere else, this changed later on. And we have to consider the 'long run' also: These shields are mainly there to prevent constant uprisings when Austria and Hungary eventually unite. Also the Turks have those shields in the same places. When it comes to the classical showdown on the Balkans they both should be on equal terms. Setting shields in the HRE instead would mean we would preset Austrian strategy on uniting the HRE during the REST of the gametime.
That´s why in general we should not take only the situation in 1492 into account but the whole timespan. This issue is not regarding Austria alone, but also almost all other countries. E.g. the Muscovites in 1492 had no idea of getting to Siberia...

I will leave those shields in place for now. But we surely can come back to this issue agan later, when we all have accumulated some experience with how it works out in our actual games.
