I had removed HOI from my computer. (Okay, I screwed that up, and details of that fiasco are somewhere in this board, but with help I successfully removed all traces of it from the computer.)

With the appearance of patch 1.06, I reloaded the game and the patch.

I went to start the game. I got the typical advertising screen, which I hit "escape" to get past, and the machine is back on the desktop. Letting the advertising play just means I wait a little longer before seeing the desktop. What am I missing on the install?

Any suggestions?

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock

If you had renamed the AVI folder you would not be seeing the opening intro "advertisement" screens. ;)

You're right. Instead the screen flashes briefly like the game is going to start, then nothing. I'm not sure why all of a sudden the game will not work. It has worked on this machine before and no changes have been made.

I'm convinced that this is tied to the fact that I botched the removal of the game last time, and had to manually go in and remove certain files, with your assistance.

At this point, I have not even attempted to load the patch. I am trying to get 1.00 working and then load the patch. I figure why complicate things.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Na patch it and try, but do rename the avi folder post patch as well.

The avi folder had already been renamed. It's called 'stuff' now. I've downloaded the "Hearts of Iron 1.06 update" "English only - works with all versions of HoI" and installed it. The result, sad to say, is still the same. A long pause, a black screen, then back to the desktop.

I appreciate your help, but I'm rapidly reaching the point of saying 'screw it, I'll play EUII instead'. Any other thoughts?

Try turning the music off in the config file, while you are at it try a different game resolution, like the lowest one.

Lot's of things to try do not despair just yet. :)

I have tried both turning off the music in the HOI settings, on the PC and even removing the music file from program file all with no luck.

I have changed the resolution both for the game and the PC and a combination of the above as well, still with no luck.

I have noticed that when you click on the drive the holds the game and the options show to either run the game install the game remove the game, ect, the option to install the game is still an option to be selected. I have not noticed if it was like this in the past but as my memory serves me when other games were installed this feature was always not able to be chosen. I wonder if there may be a connection.

Okay let's wipe the game from your system, folow the instructions here
Uninstall HOI .

Then do a fresh install, rename the AVI folder and see if the game starts up.

Okay, no Victoria, no EUII, re-loaded HOI, renamed avi file, loaded patch, done everything else. My roommate, who is more computer savvy than I am, went through and scrubbed the machine of all traces of Paradox prior to the reload. We also did a full, detailed scan of the machine, just for good measure.

Still just a half second of black and then desktop.

Did you have this problem with 1.05/1.05c or not?

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Castellon, at the end of the day, the entire machine pretty much crashed and burned, for reasons not particularly related to the game. The difficulty with the game was just one symptom among many and my efforts to salvage the machine were going nowhere. The result has been my breaking down and buying a new tower. Starting from scratch, on the new machine, the game has loaded and run fine. And, the game now runs at good speed, loads in a second, and autosaves without a hiccup.

Sorry to keep coming back to you. You've been a good sport about the whole thing.

No Problem.
Sorry you had to spend the money, but happy for you with your new found speed. :)
