Well, EU2 files are generally just text documents. You can open them in wordpad, notepad, or any similar editor provided you remember to save them with the correct file extension and not the editor's default extension.

The technical specs on your computer are fine, but not likely the cause of the problem. :)

Try opening the save file for your game in notepad and searching down the file for your country's info. I'm not at my home computer right now, but if memory serves it should be found by searching for 'country = SPA' a few times until you find an entry at the beginning of a new data block ( it will be marked by a curly-looking bracket '{' ).

Then look in that section until you find the monarch table for your country. This should be denoted by 'monarchtable = {' somewhere in the text block.

Don't make any changes to the save game, just posting the contents of the monarch table brackets might help.

Are there other historicalmonarchs after that one? Monarchs don't die until another monarch becomes active.

And why is Isabel y Fernando a 2/4/2? Are you playing a mod?

Well there's several things strange about that monarchs list:
- It lists name before date
- The stats of Isabella and Ferdinand are not normal
- It lists ADM before DIP instead of after
- It uses the 'rank' command (used for leaders not monarchs)
- all the monarchs are dormant (this would be why you are stuck with the same monarch)

I would recommend reinstalling the v1.09 patch. Something obviously isn't installed properly. Or you might be using a mod which has a terribly written monarch file.

Actually, this is the way all monarchs appear in saved games.
- all the monarchs are dormant (this would be why you are stuck with the same monarch)

This is the problem. I have no idea how they could all have ended up dormant. Merry da Hobbit, can you post the first part of monarchs.spa (open it with Notepad)?

So as you can see everyone is dormant and I will never be able to annex Portugal with my dumbish Queen.
Is there a cheat to wake a monarch up?

I was referring to the file "Db/monarchs/monarchs.spa". We've already established that your save has problems; I was just curious whether the monarch file has the same problems. If so, the same thing will happen to Spain every game.

There isn't a cheat to wake them up, but you can just change "dormant = yes" to "dormant = no". Be careful, though: Spain has two potential monarch lines after the War of Spanish Succession in 1700 (starting with Carlos III or Felipe V), so you will need to leave everyone from Felipe V on down dormant. There is an event to potentially sleep the Habsburg line and wake the Bourbons in 1700.

Also, can you confirm what patch you're using? You should see the version number in the upper left-hand corner of the screen at the main menu.
 
It is important to know whether there's a mod installed too. It actually looks to me like there was an event or similar sleeping all those monarchs.
 
Numbering seems to be vanilla monarchs.spa but there is no event for sleeping monarchs beginning with Carlos I (4141)...

As MichaelM said, Db/monarchs/monarchs.spa should give some answers, especially if a mod is used. Optionfile entry value of the header section will say.

Hi,
Well I feel pretty dumbish because I checked the main menu and I was using version 1.00. I never told the 1.09 patch where to go until now. Version 1.09 is in now and I am restarting.
Thanks to everyone for all the help.
I learned some good things. How to find my game file and delete it. How to patch correctly to the right location. How to open a game file with notepad and copy/paste it.
Mostly I learned what a nice helpful group you are.
