Hi all,

I'm a huge fan of Crusader Kings 2 and Europa Universalis 4. I played this games for hundreds of hours, specially CK2 which I love. The only expansion I have for CK2 is the Old Gods though.

I was interested at first in Imperator: Rome but I was disappointed with reviews it got at launch. It seems that most of the issues people were complaining about were dealt with and the game is on the right path.

With the current discounts I'm interested in expanding my ownership over Paradox goodness but I'm not sure which I should pick, Imperator: Rome or some CK2 expansions?

I have over 500h of gameplay in CK2 only with old gods expansion. Imperator timeline doesn't particularly appeal to me. I prefer CK2 and EU4 timelines. But being it a newer and whole new game might give me more in terms of value than CK2 expansions?!

The expansions I'm considering for CK2 are: Way of Life, Legacy of Rome, Conclave, Holy Fury.
Eventually Charlemagne for the earlier start.

What are your opinions about this?
Imperator: Rome VS Way of Life, Legacy of Rome, Conclave, Holy Fury ?

Even in its latest patch, I:R continues to be only a game where you need to optimize your strategies to conquer the most, the fastest. A map painter, northing more. For a Paradox title, a grand strategy game in 2019 should be more than that, as CK2, developed 7+ years ago, show. In my opinion I:R game mechanics would be excellent in 2004 but game design evolves, consumer taste also evolves and consumer expectations increase. So, for 2019 and as we are talking about this developer, I:R falls much, much short. It continues to be the weakest title Paradox has in development at present. However, if conquering the map and optimizing the mechanics to paint the map suits you, by all means buy it.

However, as you stated you enjoyed CK2 thoroughly with so few DLC, I strongly suggest that you buy some of CK2 DLC. Of these I find Way of Life, Conclave and Holy Fury the best to get. After these ones I'd pick The Republic and Sword of Islam.

Ck2 its just the best PDX game ever made, you cannot compare Imperator to it. Go and buy these DLC, you will enjoy the game a lot.

You said you already love CK2 - and it only gets better with the DLC, especially Holy Fury and Conclave.
I haven't tried I:R, but the core of it is the map painter, which is what you have in EU4 - so assume it will feel a lot more like EU4 with different buttons than CK2.

If you want to paint go for IR, otherwise slaughter your vassals newborns to consolidate your realm with the CK2 expansions.

AFAIK CK2 allows the fastest painting in terms of game-years other than HOI 4, which advances time in hourly increments rather than days. WC in ~5 years is a possibility in CK2 with enough abuses lol. Even the best of the best elite players can't do this in the other Pdox titles.

Yes, but unlike the other games CK2 is just as much fun when your empire comes crashing down, as the role playing is more important that the empire building. If you lost big parts of your empire playing their other titles, you would probably be in mourning due to the shock of it. That is why Crusader Kings is the best game.

In many ways this is why the game is less about painting the map - anyone can conquer the world, that isn't really what you are fighting against. Instead the game allows you to focus on the important things in life... Whatever you (or your character) might feel that is...

Pfft, only if you're @jwalche
And he's a treasure of the community.
Most ck2 players never get anywhere near a world conquest.

Everyone else answered your questions.

I'll offer this:

If you register your games here on the forum, you get the nifty game icons under your name and open up the tech support, mod, multi-player and other sections of forum for each game you own.

it doesn't change anything about your games though. Once upon a time, this was the only copy protection in PI games. No root kits or any such. Just register to the forum to get access to the forum goodies.

One advantage to having the game icons is that it also gives icons for the DLC you have so when you ask game questions it helps us know what parts of the game you have in case that impacts how to answer.

Sounds like you want the CK2 expansions really then. You have 500 hours in CK2 and don’t have WOL!

Your missing out on tonnes of options using just the one expansion, although an extremely good expansion that is. There are tonnes of articles listing the DLC for CK2 and what they offer so I suggest looking at something like that.

Go for something different and try Imperator. It’s a gorgeous game with neat mechanics like population and migrations, character and province loyalty, trade, different unit types and traditions etcs
