I really enjoy playing as the Japanese, I'm currently playing them. I've conquered China, taken the Alaskan Island chain, Midway the Solomon's, All of Indonesia, Papau Guinea, Burma, and Ceylon, & it's early 43. I haven't moved into India because what's the point? I won't encounter and British Resistance, just like I haven't encountered any resistance anywhere. My Navy's is the USN's equal and hasn't had any problems pwning the pacific. But this isn't surprising because the American Carrier force has been stationed in Virginia the entire war.

But, enough Complaining! This has inspired me to create a Japanese game play improvement pack, and I'd like to bounce some idea's off of ya'll. Here's some a rough sketch of the events and changes I'm in the process of making.

Event's/changes for Sino Japanese war and subsequent occupation
-give the player a choice about the Nanjing massacre have that choice inform how future occupied peoples are treated. if certain aspects of certain European countries certain unfortunate histories aren't supposed to be discussed & glossed over, lets not even have a Nanjing massacre event, or at least give the player the choice to have his soldiers act in a noble way.
-Communist Partisans in China (During and after the Sino-Japanese war)
(force player to use some of his infantry for garrison, & create a defense in depth)
-A transfer of Chinese heavy industry from China to Japan, leave puppet China with maybe 10 IC, tops. China shouldn't be able to spam infantry units after the war, Japan should be responsible for the majority of it's garrison and defense.
-if the player chooses total occupation perhaps this could be represented by the creation of military districts represented as countries & ruled by japanese generals (like the North China country that can be liberated)
-Maybe an event chain to reestablish Pu Yi as Emperor in China, or make Hirohito puppet China's HoS if the player chooses

Political/foreign policy Events/Pacific war events
-Represent Kodoha Clique and Tohokai clique struggle e & eventual creation of Imperial Rule assistance society
-Represent Army Navy Rivalry
-If 2-26 Coup successful have it lead to war with USSR, and have Araki has HoG ( The Kodoha was strongly anti communist, and favored a preemptive strike against the soviets)
-If the player has successfully conquered China before 1941, has naval parity with the USA, & has sufficient oil reserves allow for the possibility of a Japanese/USA Non aggression pact
-allow for USA initiated war/maybe reverse pearl harbor (Casus belli? US Asian economic interests threatened by complete Japanese dominance in China, Challenged as dominant power in the region)
-Allow moderate elements(primarily in the navy) like Inoue, Yonei, and Yamamoto to form a goverenment via coup d'teat
-allow for creation of Indian National Army, and other National liberation armies
-represent Japanese East Asian Co-prosperity sphere
-don't make pearl harbor a given, allow for possibility of little damage, or even a Japanese naval disaster, (American carriers that are out of port catching the Japanese First Air Fleet with their pants down.)
-represent a successful blockade of Australia via occupation of port morsby, Solomons Rabaul and Lae
A.I. Improvements
-Lock American forces in Phillipines
-Lock British India Army in Calcutta/Mumbai.... whatev
-lock Soviet Far East Army
-Find out if there is a way to make US focus it's carrier operations in the Pacific, same with Britain
- Find out if there is a way to make US, better manage it's island hopping campaign, if not.... Trick A.I. into doing so

Misc.
-Better represent Japanese industrial strength and weaknesses
-Better represent Japanese Tech Teams
-represent lack of heavy weapons in Japanese divisions & Japanese use of mixed brigades
-& finally incorporating foxy geisha's

Comments, Criticisms and recommendations please. I'd especially like some input on improving Pacific war AI.

I think you're on to something here and I wish you luck. I especially like your ideas for the AI though I Think that some of your proposed surrender events have already been touched upon in the Fall of the Dragon mod. Regardless it all sounds very promising, will be watching.

Thanks for the support, and thank you for bringing the fall of the dragon mod to my attention, I look forward to playing it once I have a little more free time!

I'd like to bring up two points that I really think are worth discussing.

First off, with mod's like ccip and fall of dragon already in existence. What do you think of a improved Asia package ( a cooler sounding name can be thought up in the future :) )
- a real overhaul of India, it one of the largest population centers in the world
it's important don't you think,? and should thus have some real potential for fun gaming.
- an improvement of the Aussie game experience
- use your imagination

Secondly
for the sake of extrapolation What do you think Japan have done if they had conquered China before the oil embargo? Would they have needed to DoW the allies? Why? for resources? Idealogical reasons? what's the casus belli in this event? I mean of course a neutral japan is boring, but what realpolitik reason would lead to war? Could USA possibly instigate the war?
(I'm working on an event chain that's flexible in any case, Danzig or war is boring because you always know when the war is going to start, but what if I can create an event chain that triggers a war, only when economic conditions are right, and make it flexible, after all a victorious japan in china is a-historical so the branching off points from that are almost infinite)

I don't think the odds off this would be very large though.

As you can see the theme during all Japanese attacks on the allies were surprises and pretty much all off them were very successful (sinking of PoW for example).

Also since the Pearl harbour event don't have the US actually lose any ships it's fairly harmless. Especially with large parts of the US navy being passive.

Japan wanted the Dutch East Indies for resources and wanted the Philippines I believe as a source of labor. They already had some minor production factories set up there before the war and had hand picked a number of locals to help when their army arrived.

The US would never have started anything against them in that era although they may have intervened if the Dutch East Indies (or Australia or New Zealand of course) were attacked.

The US attitude on China was mainly against any European colonial attempts. Asians killing other Asians of course would have been condemned but nothing more than the Flying Tigers would have ever been sent. There were a decent number of Christian Missonaries in China pre-war from the US and so long as Japan did not savage them too much, the government would have complained but did little.

Thanks for the links bestmajor,

In response to your question.
The Japanese political and military establishment was anti communist in general, the majority of these military thinkers held the rational opinion that the Japanese would be at a severe disadvantage, and would have the odds against them in the case of a sustained land campaign in Siberia.

Sadao Araki on the other hand was not very rational!

He was stridently anti-communist and led the Soviet studies department of the Japanese army. He was the author of the Northern-strike strategy, the planned preemptive invasion of the Soviet Union
He philosophies informed to a large extent the Far-right wing establishment of Japan, He was also highly involved with radicalizing propaganda campaign directed at the Japanese public He was a major proponent of spiritual training(which included idea's like wearing a magical piece of cloth could protect one from bullets  )

Any ways,
With my modification(tentatively), a successful 2-26 would lead to Araki becoming prime minister, Japan becoming National Socialist in political ideology, A more direct alliance with Nazi Germany (maybe a via a revised tripartite pact, that didn't have the stipulation that it's signatories weren't obligated to come to each others defense in the event of war with the soviet union.) Hence Japanese coordinated involvement in Operation Barbarossa. Picture a a two front war against Soviet Union & Nationalist China,(or if Nat. China Puppeted, Nat China Vs. Communist China, Japan Vs. Sov Union.) plus possible(but likely) later war with the United States. Total War! (my maniacal laughter )

I like your ideas, especially the possibility of the US recognizing Japanese hegemony of China if China has been conquered before the oil embargo was enacted. One thought, though: Maybe only have the non-aggression pact event fire if China has been conquered AND Japan either makes China its puppet or it makes a deal with the different factions to keep China fragmented and weak compared to Japan. If Japan keeps China all to itself, though, all bets are off.

A couple of other questions. If Japan does create an Asian hegemony, is there any way for Japan to form its own 'Axis' independent of Germany? That way, if Japan does go its own way, it won't be left on the sidelines by not joining the Axis directly. The other question is, if Japan does not join the Axis, what kind of jet fighter would it develop without input from Messerschmidt? My opinion would be to use a picture of the Kyushu J7W1 Shinden instead of the ME-262.

I'd very much like to see Japan declare on the USSR instead of the USA sometimes.

Especially if Germany is busy wiping out the USSR as effectively as it currently does in Dec 41
