This thread is a continuation of this thread in the general forum of CKIII.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind

1. Be respectfull towards other posters, the developers etc.
2. Keep it friendly, discussions about historical accuracy can sometimes get heated, so before you make a post, read it again and think to yourself, 'If someone would make a post like this, would I become angry/mad' if yes, then rephrase your post.

I'm gonna just bring back up what initially started that thread: while I will grant that it can be difficult to 100% ascertain small time counts to their proper territories, it is weird that instead of the likely culprit, it's a random old woman that I don't recall too many sources about. Maybe I'm just mistaken and she's extremely important, but I feel like - just to give them the chance to arise as they did historically, both via player and via AI - that County Zollern should be given (back) to Friedrich I von Hohenzollern.

I mean, they did add the Wittelsbach this patch! Gotta have the people who would become the House of Windsor in! We should land the Hohenzollerns again too.

As I said in my thread, the Apostolic Church (Armenian Church) should not have "Aniconism" as one of its tenets. The Church utilizes icons, their churches are decorated with sacred paintings, and they have no dogmatic opposition to the use of icons.

It would be more historically accurate to have either Ecclesiarchy, Monasticism or Vows of Poverty tenets in place of Aniconism.

Please bring back Polish names :)

I also wonder if this could be crowdsourced somehow? The fanbase is full of people deeply knowledgeable about various regions, and deeply caring about them. Wouldn't it be nice if we were given a way to officially help Paradox?

I'd absolutely be glad to help in however little I can.

I find it amazing that people do not seem to have a problem with the ratio of male to female rulers in the game right now. At game start, Paradox's good research efforts are clear because there are virtually no female rulers - which is entirely accurate for the entire period which the game represents. But as time progresses things become ridiculous. In my last game it got to the point where female rulers actually out-numbered males.

I chuckled when I first saw a landed woman bishop in an aborted Reconquista, randomly spawned in a reconquered Cordoba. I immediately gave her the entire duchy as a joke.

Then I kept finding them in every other game.

That gets a little silly.

I think the game might just like recreating Henry VIII's infamous son problem without the rest of the whole ordeal.

From what I can make out, by tracing the lineage of these female rulers, the problem appears to be related to the Knights/Champion system. Their male family members are, mostly, being killed in combat. This is overwhelmingly the case from my observations. Result is that there is a cascading female inheritance domino effect right across the map.

Top tier dynasties don't seem to suffer so much from this as I guess, for whatever mechanic reason in game, they do not force their children into battle. But lower tier vassal dynasties (dukes/counts) suffer badly.

What I don't know is whether this is by design, or an oversight by Paradox. I really hope it's a bug, because male-domination is a defining feature of the medieval period (of course) and without it any claims to "historical accuracy" is a bad joke.

But, yeah, it's really bad. I hope they do something about it. But I guess I might have to wait for some serious people, like the HIP team or something, to create a proper mod.

1.1 had some changes that were supposed to lower knight mortality, but apparently it wasn't enough.

Also, I have some feedback about how Estonia is represented in game:

Estonian rulers don’t have Estonian first names in either of the two start dates. This should be fixed ASAP.

Family names should not use "kohta" as a replacement for "of". If possible, location-based names should be in surname-given name order (non-location based names should still have given name first), but if not then just using "of" is fine.

Some suggestions regarding holding names:
  • Osel
    • Should be spelled Ösel.
    • Should be called Saaremaa when held by an Estonian ruler
  • Reval
    • Both the holdings of Harjumaa and Järva should be renamed IMO, those are both names of counties so don’t really fit for a single holding. I’d go for Harjumaa->Padise and Järva->Paide, but there are multiple valid options.
    • The county itself could be renamed to Harjumaa when held by an Estonian ruler.
  • Narva
    • Barony Wesenburg - should be spelled Wesenberg. Should be called Tarvanpää when held by Estonian ruler
    • Possible county rename: Virumaa (region name instead of single city/castle)
  • Livs
    • Should be called Sakala when held by an Estonian ruler
    • Barony Parnu - should be spelled Pärnu
    • Barony Alistegunde - rename to Aliste or Alistekund
  • Tartu
    • Barony Poltsamaa - should be spelled Põltsamaa
    • Possible county rename: Ugandi (region name instead of single city/castle)
  • Vidzeme
    • Barony Salacgriva - should be called Salatsi if held by Estonian ruler
    • Possible county rename: Vidumō (Livonian name instead of Latvian)
Minor detail, but title history should show Tartu being conquered by Yaroslav (ruler of Ruthenia) in 1030 and retaken by local ruler in 1061.

ETA: Also forgot the big one - Estonian culture should start with longships innovation unlocked.

Yeah, I heard they'd buffed Knights, but I'm not really noticing an improvement so far.

I guess they might be doing something like this already but I guess it could help the situation if they would selectively buff the survivability of all Knights from a landed dynasty. Make them progressively stronger until their death rates are ideal.

Doing that would have the added benefit of (abstractly) representing the fact that landed nobility who did actually fight battles were usually surrounded by elite guard who protected them from "real" danger. So they were, relatively, safe in battle, a lot of the time.

They should just have a much higher chance of being captured instead of killed when defeated IMO. And also maybe AI rulers should be more reluctant to send their sons into battle before they have any grandsons.

Reactions:
The Jewish faiths' tenets are somewhat flawed. They're generally good, but there's one significant problem; "Halakha" is the Jewish localization of "Religious Law". Instead, it should be the Jewish localization for "Legalism".. The Legalism tenet is far closer to the definition of Halakha then Religious Law is. Religious Law is about religion applying to secular law, and Legalism is about divinely given laws for everyone. Halakha is very certainly the latter, and not the former. Every Jewish faith that currently has Halakha should still have Halakha, but the new one this time. This means that Jewish faiths that currently have the Legalism tenet (Rabbinism and Kabarism) would need to have a different tenet. I think a new tenet, “Pedagogical”, which grants bonuses to the chance of successful education of a child, should fill that space; the emphasis placed on education is one of the defining traits of Rabbinic Judaism. So all Jewish faiths with Legalism replace it with Pedagogical, then all Jewish faiths with Religious Law replace it with Legalism, then "Halakha" is changed to the Jewish localization for Legalism rather then Religious Law.

Here are my database corrections/improvements and other miscellaneous suggestions.

Bug reports:
Suggestions:
Here are some counties with corrected title history to add existing characters who are currently unlanded but should be counts. There are more examples we could do (such as Tusculum, and counties in Scotland) but they would require additional/edited characters so I have not done those.

Namur

Added the counts of Namur.

You should also attach the county coat of arms to the dynasty: 302 = c_namur

Code:
c_namur = {
    841.1.1 = {
        liege = k_lotharingia
        holder = 7815 # Giselbert
    }
    892.1.1 = {
        holder = 144994 # Richwin
    }
    923.11.15 = {
        liege = d_lower_lorraine
        holder = 161534 # Berengar
    }
    946.1.1 = {
        holder = 90116 # Robert I
    }
    981.1.1 = {

Bouillon (as Chiny)

Added the counts of Chiny.

Code:

    }
    1065.1.1={

    }
}

Maastricht

This doesn't have any historical holders really, so just give it to the Wigeriche to replace Chiny (now it has counts).

Code:
c_maastricht = {
    867.1.1 = {
        liege = k_lotharingia
        holder = 161525

    }

    }
}

Zollern

Code:
c_zollern = {

        holder = 168191
    }

    }
    1061.1.1 = {
        holder = 212395 # Friedrich I
    }
}

Vaihingen

This change is because Otto von Zutphen should not be ruling here as he's meant to be in Zutphen.

Code:
c_vaihingen = {
    867.1.1 = {
        liege = d_west_franconia
        holder = 161555 #Werner Salian

Zutphen

        liege = k_lotharingia
    }

        liege = d_lower_lorraine
    }
    1063.1.1 = {
        holder = 41722 # Otto
    }
}

Mark (same title history as Berg up to 1066)

Mark was split off from the county of Berg, not Cologne. It should be owned by the counts of Mark and not the archbishops, so it's better to be a copy-paste of Berg.

Code:
c_mark = {
    759.1.1={

    }

Normandy is weird and various people have the wrong counties or none at all, and William only controls Alençon, which is... odd.

Bayeux

Bayeux should be owned by William's half-brother Odo in 1066.

Eu is already a bug report linked above.

With these changes, William should control Rouen (capital) and Lisieux; Robert d'Eu control Eu; Richard d'Avranches control Avranches; Odo of Bayeux control Bayeux; Robert of Mortain control Alençon (Mortain); and Richard de Vassy control Évreux. That gives you a more historical Normandy and some more playable counts.

Thanks for starting this thread @Veldmaarschalk!

Reactions:
The main problem with ahistoricity in CKIII for me is the fact that the AI when Basque enacts Equal Gender Law as soon as they can. Historically Medieval Basques did not follow that Succession custom as it can be seen in the holders of the Kingdom of Navarra, the Lordship of Biscay and the Duchy of Vasconia (Gascony in 876), the three 'Basque states', and that they instead followed Male preference.

I am not against having the option available for Human players but for the sake of Historical accuracy the AI should remain Male preference. For example, Occitan, Aragonese and Catalan characters are like Basques in access to Equal Gender Law but the AI just never chooses to change to that unless their Religion is Equal instead of Male dominated. Every time I see the Kingdom of Navarra with Cognatic succession while being Catholic the historian and Navarrese in me dies a little inside.

It is explained more in depth in this thread:

These also require some edited and additional characters, so they are added below.

Tivoli (as Tusculum)

Added the counts of Tusculum.

You should also attach the county coat of arms to the dynasty: 100349 = c_tivoli

Code:
c_tivoli = {

        liege = k_romagna

Beaumont

Added the counts of Beaumont.

This is a new family so they need a new dynasty:

        birth = yes
    }
    1101.1.1 = {

}

So that's two more playable counties and another one fixed by having the correct dynasty and missing heir added.

Family names should not use "kohta" as a replacement for "of". If possible, location-based names should be in surname-given name order (non-location based names should still have given name first), but if not then just using "of" is fine.
Turns out that if you input "of" in Google Translator in English and translate it to Estonian, the result is "kohta". Perhaps that's how the error came to be?

Personally, I feel that the history files of various characters long-dead before 867 and/or 1066 should be looked into for historical inaccuracies that could be fixed by changing their culture, religion and traits. Off the top of my head:
  • The default Pagan religion is still in the game, and is used to represent the pre-Christian Celts and Arabs, as well as one pagan Hungarian. Perhaps it was about time to remove Paganism, and introduce two new dead pagan religion to represent Celtic and Arabic polytheism?
  • Pagan Frisians, Old Saxons, Anglo-Saxons, Goths, Vandals and Franks are represented as having the explicitly Norse religion of Ásatrú as their religion, so perhaps a religion representing Continental Germanic polytheism could be implemented?
  • Various Arian rulers are represented as having Catholic religion, instead of Arianism as their religion.
  • Most pre-Schism rulers are represented as having either Catholic or Orthodox religion based on what side of the Great Schism their culture wound up in, long before the notable schisms even took place. So, perhaps Early Christian, Ephesusian Christianity and Chalcedonian Christianity could be added to the game's history files to better represent the faith of pre-Schism Christians?
  • German culture is almost completely removed from the game, and is only used to represent the culture of Gothic and Vandal characters (such as Theodoric the Great). So, perhaps it'd be a good idea to add Gothic and Vandal cultures into the game?
  • Brittonic/Romano-British culture could be added to split Welsh culture's absolutely massive character list, and to better represent the culture of many Roman-era Celtic characters who are currently represented as Welsh.
  • The Kingdom of Winideheim is meant to represent the realm of Samo, yet Samo is not listed as its historic ruler.

Some excellent points!

re Arianism; https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/could-we-have-arianism-as-a-religious-doctrine.1313679/

I'd definitely like to see it added, but how best to implement it? Another interesting one (either as a faith or a tenet) would be Pelagianism.

Germanic, Basque and Celtic paganism would certainly be great additions.
Pelagianism was no longer around in 867, and unlike Arianism which had notable historical followers, Pelagianism was never the state-religion or the faith of any noteworthy historical leader. I wouldn't oppose its inclusion, but in my opinion it doesn't seem like the most relevant faith that could be added to the game.

Basque paganism seems to me like an excellent addition to the game, given that it was still extant in both 867 and 1066 bookmarks and existed according to some sources all the way up to 1200s, unlike Celtic paganism which had disappeared centuries ago in 867 bookmark, and continental Germanic paganism which, at best, was followed by some Saxon freemen in Saxony and in England would've had so small surviving communities that they were ignored by the church authorities.
