I have seen others who have said that they called their provider and asked for an increase in bandwith. I decided that this would be useful. Maybe they charge me a little more... but it was worth checking into.

I called. Talked to a tech woman. Told her what I wanted. She laughed at me. Yes thats right... thought I was some NUT who just escaped form the loony bin. She said I have the maximum I can get at 3mb down and 250k up. She rambled for some time before saying I could switch to a business account for more than double what I am paying now... but couldn't tell me the specifics as to how much it would cost.

Are others finding this easier?

Nothing to do with tech support.
Let's move you to the MP forum.

Heh, far easier said than done. You need to jump thru a bunch of hoops as well as having a qualified job offer from a company, and a bunch of paperwork from that company explaining why there are no qualified citizens that could perform that job.

With that huge download, and tiny upload, I would guess you're on a cable/modem from a CATV provider? I have Qwest DSL, and they have two flavors of service, basic with 256K download, and 128K upload, all for $19.95 a month, which is basically broadband for dialup users who wouldn't know the difference any way. They also sell a "premium" service for $39.95 a month with 900 to 1000k upload, and upto 1500K download. The biggest download speeds I have ever logged were in the 1200K range, and uploads consistently over 900K. So when I host a game, I have no real troubles at all.... :p

Get used to that...sales people used to laugh at me when i asked for a 20gig hard-drive 7 years ago.... Tunnel Vision...gotta love it

What provider are you using? Sounds like you need to switch. With Ameritech (now SBC) I had no problems getting an uprated DSL..as a matter of fact they offered 3 diffrent levels before I even asked about them. I went with the mid level. Don't know how they are now that SBC bought them out...I'll find out if and when I need more bandwidth :) Had some problems getting it on line at the right speed, and some how I was patched through to tier three support. The guy was rather amazed I got his number, as he was the regional (for all the midwest) tech supervisor, but said he'd have it looked into. It was running at the proper speeds the next day. I assume they installed the base level DSL equipment instead of the mid range? *shrugs* It cooked thats all I know!

P.S. ALWAYS get a name, a FULL name. If that lady laughed at you you should have taken it up with their supervisor, and then their supervisor, and so on. Had the same problem with a bad pixel on my laptop out of the box. After many hours of dealing with idiots, I finally got a hold of some female honcho at their corperate HQ and chewed her a new one until she cried. She wouldn't give me the company presidents number, but she gave me the email for the VP of customer service. Problem with most places now is that the customer service is outsourced overseas and they have little knowledge other then what's been scripted for them. Contact technical support, and ask them about it. Get the promo code from THEM if you can..then call and tell customer service that's what you want.

I'm in the UK and have just been looking at uprating my broadband. My service provider is British Telecom and most domestic ADSL users will be using their service, either directly or via a third party like Tiscali.

Currently my up speed is 288 kbps (thousands of bits per seconds). I've just learnt that BT are starting a program of uprating the speed of all ADSL lines, starting this month. They say that the new service will be 2 Mbps but I've just eqnuired and that's the down speed. The up speed will be typically 1 Mbps. That's about 4 times more bandwidth than currently and so should keep pace with the extra demands of HoI II quite nicely. Players in the UK who get this service should make reasonable hosts for players throughout Europe.

Note that the software provided by them includes a little applet which sits in the system tray. It looks like two green arrows and, if you hover over it with your mouse, it tells you the current up/down speed of your connection. I suppose that all ADSL users have something like this.
