Maybe we should collect good information about the crusades in one place (if this already has been done, please direct me)? There must be an enormous amount of good links and books out there.
My favourite book is 'The Crusades Through Arab Eyes' by Amin Maalouf.

Havard:
This was also the turning point of their expansion. Raids into southern France was stopped, and the Islamic invaders finally beaten in the famous battle of Tours in 722 where the Frankish Mayor Domus Charles earned his byname “Martel”, the Hammer.

If I'm not mistaken, it was at Poitiers, in 732. :)

732 it is, definitely. A typo there, thanks. As for the name it's called both the battle of Tours and the battle of Poitiers. The actual battlefield is between these two cities :)

Eer... Sorry to interrupt, but I've never heard of the "Bataille de Poitiers" being called "Bataille de Tours"... and I'm French... studying Middle Ages... But then it might just be me

I'll let Google decide then ;)

"Battle of Tours" 732 : 1290 hits

"Battle of Poitiers" 732 : 516 hits

It appears to me that both are used. From what I've seen Poitiers is probably most correct (or least wrong) since the battlefield was probably closest to that city.

My mistake then...

But maybe is it just English people that refer to this battle as "Bataille de Tours..."

French webpages, using Google:

Bataille de Potiers 732: 659 hits

Batailles de Tours 732: 403 hits

Well this IS weird! I think I'll go yell at my teachers! :D

That's strange.

From http://www.e-moyenage.com/poitiers.htm

To make a short summary of the paragraph, the three sources that described the battle didn't make any mention of the site of the battle, except for the second one (...) who suggested that the battle took place near the town of Poitiers. No one knows for sure, though, where was the exact location...

I started a thread about this battle a year ago on the French forum, and never was there any mention of the city of Tours.

Iam partial to Karen Armstrong myself.
