ok... I edited the dynasties.txt file (added my family name, new unused id # and county I would like them to show up (thx Daywalker for the map))

now...

1. will they now begin showing up randomly in the county as a court member when I start a new game?

and...

2. is there a way to have the new name available at the start of a new game instead of showing up later as a court member? or to better phrase my question, how can I insert my name into the existing duke of normandies spot and begin a new game already in place?

thx,

Terp

If you chnage an existing characters dynasty id to your new one, then this character will have your name. Change the first name as well and you can play yourself. Or if you really hate yourself you can play someone else and assanate yourself.

If you add your surname as a potential for a province, then I believe that it will emerge with the random courtiers - i.e. y'know when you start a game and have like 1 person in your court, and the game generates a number of decent people.

Or else you can get [Insert-name-of-cool-person]'s 'Cool Courtiers Events' which generate stewards, spymasters, etc. for your court, who will also have the provincial surnames.

choose which province leader you'd like to be. write down his name. check if his name exists in dynasties file and change it to your own name. then go to the senario files you're interested to play and find the id and your leader's name and change it again. i think in the senario there are two files you must change. and that's it now you are a ruler. But. check your potential leader genealogy at the start up. I change the count's of Taranto surname from "de Hauteville to "Spartakos" and made his coulture petseneg orthodox.
But then i saw that the prince of Apulia my liege has "Spartakos" surename too and he is norman catholic. I even saw that my geanaology linked to his. my grandfather i guess was his father or something like that.

Abelard de Hautevilles' father was the brother of Robert the Guiscard, yes.

If you want to add a new character unrelated to existing characters you first add a new dynasty in dynasties.txt, then update the ruler character of choice to change name/dynasty and delete father/mother. Checl also for any kids - you'd like to either delete them or update their name/dynasty too :)

I tried doing what was said above...

using 1066_scenario_characters.inc

I added a new dynasty tag with the name "O'Duibhir"
and then changed the dynasty of the character to the same tag.

But no dynasty tag appears.

O'Duibhir? Is that O'Dwier? When I lived in Ireland I had a good friend by that name who hung in our group; he was from New York origninally. I can't wait to get this game and add the McCollums as counts in Ulster; we're going to rule the island :)

I intend to add Blair to the County and Duchy of Atholl, as well as alter the coat of arms to match.

Blair Castle is the seat of the Duchy of Atholl, and Blairs have been Dukes of Atholl, so while my character will be fantasy, the fact that there was a Blair (direct male ancestor of me) having that title is not, as Blairs had that title in the 1200's.

I plan to AAR it, and I will make it a challenge. Michael Blair (my name) shall have mediocre stats, say 5's across the board. It will be up to the breeding program to do better.

Just edit yourself into the scenario files:

Dynasty:

}
dynasty = {
id = { type = 12 id = 900000 }
name = "Blair"
province = { 11 44 }
}

Character:

}
character = {
id = { type = 10 id = 800001 }
name = "Michael"
gender = male
dynasty = { type = 12 id = 900000 }
country = ATHO
religion = catholic
culture = scottish
birthdate = { year = 1049 month = january day = 1 }
dna = "08000008060603"
attributes = {
martial = 5
diplomacy = 5
intrigue = 5
stewardship = 5
health = 5
fertility = 5
}
}

Note: Dublin is there, because my family is partly Irish (and even English, ultimately, Tony Blair, etc).

Good news: I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was modifying the scenario dyanasties... So I went back and changed the one in the db folder.

And yes, O'Duibhir is the old way of saying what has become, here in the states, just Dwyer (they stole our O). There's another one that's more fun, O'Duibhidhir, but most of the family histories I find show the shorter one.

Anyway, it's fun to put yourself in the game, I can say that much. :)
