I know this sounds like a really dumb question and if this is in the wrong place i apologize

i am playing 1.04a and i want to install the Beta but it just sends me to WinAce where some files are.. how do i install the patch? and am i getting it from the right place? could somone please give me the patch link to make sure i am going to the right place?

You need to extract the patch into the CK folder so that it overwrites the files there.

Could you give more specific instructions? I have been getting the patches for a while now, but I wonder if I am fully installing them because after installing the most recent patch (June), it still says I have one from May.

After downloading a beta patch, you need to have a decompression program that can handle .rar files. I myself use ZipGenius, which can be downloaded here http://downloads.zipgenius.it/

When you have such a decompressor installed, double click on it (or alternatively use the file open menu and point to the downloaded file). Now select "extract file to" (in case of ZipGenius) or similar program, and select the root directory in which you have installed Crusader Kings. That should replace all necessary files with the new ones in the beta release.

You can check afterwards though, if you are unsure. The latest build of crusaders.exe should have a file date stamp of 06-03-2005.

I use WinRAR. When I open the patch it is divided into folders: scenario, db, config, etc. I either extract them individually to the appropriate folder or I select everything and extract it to the CK folder (I've tried both ways). Also there is a .exe file. I've not been sure what to do with this file so I always extract it to the CK folder. Ussually the date in the corner is updated but this time it didn't for some reason.

EDIT: I think for some strange reason I wasn't downloading the newest patch, even though I thought I was. But I would still like to know if I have to extract that .exe file and what it does, if you know.

The exe file is critical part of the patch, it is the improved version of game executable by Johan for that beta patch and not installing it will cause problems including, but not limited to, CTDs.

With winrar it's usually best to extract whole file with full paths to main Crusader Kings folder and overwrite all.

Im missing somethings:

Hello :p

I am having a difficult time with the "extract to" portion, and would greatly appreciate some advice. I have never down-loaded any patch, but am sure I have the most recent 1.04a and have a WinRAR.

I have the 1.04a game downloaded to my desktop, seems it is drive d, while the patch is on C, (is the a, b, c, and d the "root directories"?). I understand that I am trying to get the patch to be written on top of the 1.04a. But this is the limit to where I am.

I am unsure how to proceed from here. My apologies for my ignorance in downloading, but your collective expertise would be greatly appreciated....

I have WinRAR 3.42 and this is how I would do it:

  • Doubleclick the patch file, opens WinRAR with the patch open in it
  • On top bar, choose Extract To
  • In the following screen, write your Crusader Kings directory on the line, for me it's C:\Crusader Kings - you can browse to it too with the tool in the right hand side of the screen
  • Then just click Ok and say "Yes to all" when it asks about overwriting

Where exactly the patch is isn't at all important, since you can extract it to right place from everywhere on your hard drive.

Okay here is what you do.
Abandon whatever you have done since I have no idea what you did to get in theat state or what state you are in.

1) Uninstall CK from your sysytem delete any patches you have downloaded.
2) Create a folde rin "My Documents" call it patches to be able to find it quick.
3) Download the 1.04a and the beta patch to this folder.
4) Install the game from the CD.
5) Run the 1.04a patch by double clicking on it.
6) Now if you have installed Win RAR properly the beta patch will look like a stack of books. Double click it and the WinRAR program will start,Select everything, hit the extract to button. In the destination path make sure you have the main CK folder selected. Keep directory/Folder structure, and overwrite all files. ...
7) PLay the patched game.

EDIT: if you feel comfortable you could try starting at #6
